Shell Native Landscaping Guide for Use at Home

Are you interested in getting involved in your local community with environmental efforts? One of Shell Oil Company’s conservation partners, the Wildlife Habitat Council, has created this guide on landscaping with native plants for communities and Shell-owned operating facilities. This guide contains information and tools applicable to regions throughout the U.S. We hope our wholesalers and licensees, who independently own and operate Shell-branded stations, will find the recommended guide useful for their site operations. Not only are these guides for Shell sites, but they can be utilized from your home, too. Native landscaping, even on small scales, can have a beneficial impact on the environment, wildlife, air and water quality, as well as your own backyard!

Shell Wholesaler Conservation Activities Toolkit Guide

Shell Oil Company is active throughout North America and maintains a commitment to support all operations, while protecting and enhancing biodiversity to provide multiple benefits for employees and community members. Created in partnership with Wildlife Habitat Council, the above guide provides Shell North American Wholesalers & retail locations with information and advice on how to plan and implement three of the most common conservation activities, resources, and recognition guidance. While the recommendations in this guide are limited to three activities, you may choose another that achieves your employee and community engagement goals to show your commitment to a cleaner environment.

Conserving and Restoring Wetland Habitat to Combat Erosion

Shell Oil Company has worked with Ducks Unlimited for more than 36 years and, together, we have helped conserve and restore nearly 220,000 acres of wetland habitat across Washington, Louisiana, and Texas. One of the current projects underway will restore and enhance 2,550 acres by improving water flow and diverting sediment-laden river water into Bay Denesse and Quarantine Bay, Louisiana. Earthen terraces will be constructed within open water areas to help reduce shoreline erosion, reduce turbidity, increase vegetation, and trap sediment being transported via river water to build marsh.

Supporting Coastal Resilience Across the Nation

For more than two decades, Shell Oil Company has worked with the National Fish and Wildlife (NFWF) to protect and restore our nation’s wildlife and habitats. In 2018, Shell worked with NFWF to establish the National Coastal Resilience Fund to invest in conservation projects that restore or expand natural features, such as coastal marshes and wetlands, dune and beach systems, oyster and coral reefs, forests, coastal rivers and floodplains, and barrier islands that minimize the impacts of storms and other naturally occurring events on nearby communities, while also enhancing habitats for fish and wildlife. In 2019, the Fund awarded forty-four new grants totaling $29,339,774. The 44 awards announced generated $59,993,875 in match from the grantees, providing a total conservation impact of $89,333,649.

Shell will continue its support for Coastal Resilience in 2020, as well. The Request for Proposals opened in early March. Find out more information here!

Circular Economy for Plastics Facilitates Greenhouse Gas Reduction

In 2019, Shell Oil Company announced its ambition to use 1 million tonnes of plastic waste as feedstock at all chemical plants by 2025. This is an important step towards building a circular economy by using plastic waste to produce chemicals, which can be used to make plastics again.

The first of the Shell plants to do this in 2019 was Norco Manufacturing Complex in Louisiana, USA. Our intention is to scale up the technology and deploy it at our chemical plants in North America, Europe, and Asia, gradually achieving world-scale production by 2025.
