Did you know that more than 6.4 million Americans work in the growing field of energy?

U.S. Dept of Energy Report,2017

IPAA /PESA Externship

Toyin Ope: So this week in partnership with the Independent Petroleum Association of America, IPAA, we are hosting a group of 15 high school students here at our Shell Campus. One of the goals is to provide them with real life experiences to demonstrate for them how what they learned in school, particularly pertaining to the energy industry translates into the workplace.

Toyin Ope: So while they're here we expose them to what we do show them through job shadowing, what a day in the life of an engineer or a technical professional that works in Shell looks like.

Fabiana: From job shadowing, I've seen that a lot of jobs, such as geologists in order to track the wells or determine where to drill, they use virtual reality.

Damian: I had no idea as to the extent that Shell has been working on renewable energy. They actually have multiple wind farms across America and even across the ocean.

Ihsan: And also what I've learned through Shell is networking. Networking can really help me, give me, or expand my opportunities, which I was very happy to learn throughout my two week experience.

Aymen: One thing I've learned about Shell and what they're doing in renewable energy is that they're making measures and taking actions to allow for an easier transition from nonrenewable means of energy to renewable ones.

Toyin Ope: For us, our goal is to inspire and to inform and educate about the energy industry in hopes that they would want to come and work for Shell in the future. It is important that we reach out to diverse populations, to women and minorities because they are 70% of the US population and they make up majority of the populations that we operate in.

Fabiana: I didn't know coming from an oil and gas company that they would actually start leaning towards renewable resources, so learning that they're definitely having that open mind and shifting towards wind energy or other sources, it just shows how Shell accepts different perspectives and a diversity of different ideas from different people.

Iris Diaz: I am very, very excited because the students had a lot of fun additionally to all the learning they had during these three days. I wish we can see them coming back as interns, as employees to our company.

Damian: And then notice that so far in Shell people look up to all the time, no matter who you are. It doesn't matter if you're the CEO, if you're the janitor, you're supposed to represent a company. So I'm going to try to represent my own brand when I go back home. I'm going to try to become somebody that people want to follow.

Ihsan: I want to be able to communicate and be a leader in my community leadership and join in more extracurricular activities in my school so that I can be a bigger person in my community.

Iris Diaz: And I also want to thank all of our amazing volunteers and you really inspired them. I was watching their presentations today. Thank you so much because without you, this program would have not been possible.

Speaker 8: I just want to share a little bit about my experience here. Yesterday I found what I wanted to major in finally. I want to major in chemical engineering.

Toyin Ope: And ultimately we do believe that if they are successful at becoming STEM professionals, that they will come and be in the pipeline for the Shell workforce. And that is what we need.
