Passive air monitoring collection

Passive Air Monitoring System (PAMS) Data

Shell Polymers Monaca conducts bi-weekly passive sampling for chemicals of potential concern, including benzene, 1,3-butadiene, n-hexane, naphthalene, and toluene. The site has 20 Passive Air Monitoring System (PAMS) locations.

The PAMS samples are collected and analyzed in accordance with 40 CFR 63.658(e)(1)-(2). These regulations prescribe methods for passive absorption sampling in which clean, absorbent tubes are deployed and collected every two weeks and sent to a third-party analytical laboratory for analysis. Upon collection of the used sampling tubes, a new set of tubes are deployed to begin sample collection for the next two-week period. Benzene concentration delta [or (Δc)] is reported from the two-week sample period and is calculated using the minimum and the maximum individual monitoring point sample results. If the two-week Δc is greater than the applicable action threshold, an investigation is initiated within 24 hours.
