The Shell Graduate Program
As a commercial graduate joining our Upstream Commercial business on the Shell Graduate Program, you’ll work with some of our sharpest minds to drive our growth and performance. When joining the program you’ll experience three job rotations over three to five years, designed to develop your key skills and personal qualities.
The Program will shape you into an accomplished Shell professional and support you in developing leadership attributes. If you’re curious and collaborative, using your commercial and technical know-how, you’ll gain valuable experience in Shell’s commercial environment. Our aim is to help you become a thriving Shell professional and a future industry game changer.
Upstream Commercial
The purpose of Shell’s Upstream Commercial business is to optimize the value of existing assets and to grow and reshape our portfolio to add more value. You’ll be part of a business that has a global coverage: Upstream International and Upstream Americas. Commercial supports the exploration for oil and gas, the development of projects, the management of existing assets and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) business. It’s a dynamic and rewarding environment where you can develop the skills you need to succeed in a global company.

“I believe that Shell is one of the frontrunners in the exploration of oil and gas. My role is to speak with geologists and the geophysicists that actually look at the earth and tell us whether this could be an area of interest, and then on top of that my role would be to discuss with governments the added value that Shell can bring to a country.”

“We will remain dependent on exploring oil and gas resources. Shell has designed an FLNG unit and one of the advantages of FLNG, it’s environmentally friendly. That means that we do not touch the onshore line, we don’t need to build any facilities in precious areas.”

Roles and responsibilities
Given our global nature, our Upstream Commercial business is wide-ranging. You could be supporting the exploration and recovery of crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids, in addition to controlling the processes that bring these to market.
Roles on rotation might include:
- Business Development Analyst
- Business Intelligence Advisor
- Commercial Advisor
- Gas Advocacy Analyst
- Petroleum Economist
- Portfolio Advisor
In addition, your responsibilities could include:
- Monitoring and reporting on market and competitor intelligence
- Constructing economic models to inform business decisions
- Supporting negotiations
- Communicating with internal and external stakeholders
- Liaising with corporate, technical, financial and legal departments
- Identifying and executing opportunities

The Shell Graduate Program is all about turning inquisitive, talented individuals into confident professionals. As an Upstream Commercial graduate, you'll have the opportunity to participate in Upstream and Commercial-specific training modules, as well as a set of Ethics and Compliance, Sustainable Development, Contracting and Procurement, CO2 Strategy, Health Safety Security & Environment Risk Management and Natural Gas modules.
