The Fleet Guide to Engine Oils, Coolants, and DEF
Many aspects of engine oils, coolants, and DEF’s impact a fleet. The fleet guide provides insights into many essential impacts that impact performance.
Fleet Fluid Fundamentals
Choosing the right fluids and properly maintaining them are essential for engine protection and uptime. Our technical team answers some of the most common questions fleets ask about engine oils, coolants, and diesel exhaust fluid.
Engine Oils and Viscosity
Shell Rotella T6 0W 40 Full Synthetic is not approved for JASO MA or MA2. If your application requires that approval, use Shell Rotella T6 5W 40 or 15W 40 Full Synthetic instead. These grades also help oil reach critical engine parts faster in cold temperatures.
Lower viscosity oils flow more easily at startup and can improve fuel economy. Many fleets choose lower viscosity synthetics because they help reduce engine friction while still providing strong wear protection.
Diesel Particulate Filter Protection
Ash buildup in DPFs results from oil consumption during combustion. High quality oils like Shell Rotella help control oil consumption by keeping piston rings and cylinder walls cleaner. Cleaner engines can lead to longer DPF service intervals.
Coolants and Cold Weather Tips
Extended life coolants are designed for long service life with minimal maintenance. During cold weather, be sure to check coolant level and appearance, and measure freeze point to ensure proper protection. Do not mix different types of extended life coolants and use correction fluids when additive levels are diluted.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Handling
DEF lasts one to two years when stored between 12°F and 86°F. Avoid storing DEF in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Use a first-in, first-out system for inventory, and test quality regularly to maintain purity.
