Get Ready for the Future of Engine Oil: Understanding PC-12

The trucking industry is at a pivotal point when it comes to engine oil technology. As emissions regulations tighten and engine hardware evolves, the need for more advanced lubricants becomes increasingly important. That’s where PC-12 engine oil comes in—the next generation standard set to replace API CK-4 and API FA-4 starting in 2027.

But what exactly is PC-12, and why should fleets start paying attention now?

What is PC-12?

PC-12 is the upcoming oil category being developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) in collaboration with engine and vehicle manufacturers, oil marketers, additive suppliers and other interested parties. It is being created in response to:

  • Upcoming EPA 2027 emission regulations
  • Changes in engine design, such as increased use of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and lower CO₂ targets
  • OEM demands for enhanced durability, wear protection, and fuel efficiency

There will be two subcategories within PC-12:

  • PC-12A: Backward compatible with most current engines
  • PC-12B: Designed for next-gen engines and offering fuel economy benefits, but not backward compatible

Why It Matters to Fleets

The move to PC-12 isn’t just about compliance; it’s about performance, longevity, and cost savings. Fleets that plan ahead will be best positioned to:

  • Maximize engine protection: PC-12 oils will have enhanced oxidation stability and shear resistance, making them ideal for longer drain intervals and demanding duty cycles.
  • Improve fuel economy: With lower viscosity grades and better thermal performance, PC-12 is expected to contribute to reduced fuel consumption—an essential advantage for fleets facing tight margins.
  • Extend equipment life: Advanced detergents and dispersants in PC-12 oils help minimize deposits, reducing wear and improving engine cleanliness.
  • Meet OEM requirements: Many manufacturers are already designing engines with PC-12 compatibility in mind, and using the right oil will be key for warranty compliance and optimal performance.

When to Prepare

The API is targeting the first licensing of PC-12 engine oils on January 1, 2027, in line with the implementation of the 2027 EPA regulations. Proactive fleet managers should start the conversation with their lubricant suppliers now. Understanding how your fleet's equipment, routes, and maintenance schedules may be affected can ensure a smooth transition.
