Carson Renewable Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Site (Carson, California)

In September 2021, Shell opened its first renewable compressed natural gas (R-CNG) fueling site in the US at its products distribution complex in Carson, California. The R-CNG comes from Shell’s portfolio of anaerobic digestion projects, including Shell New Energies Junction City, Shell Downstream Galloway and Shell Downstream Bovarius. The fueling site at Carson allows Shell to substantially decarbonize its product movements out of the terminal by providing 100% R-CNG for its contracted hauling company, Thompson and Harvey Bay Area.

According to the California Air Resources Board, renewable natural gas (RNG) sourced from dairy manure can result in an approximately 250 percent reduction in life cycle greenhouse gas emissions when replacing petroleum diesel in a heavy-duty application. A large fraction of the savings come from avoided methane emissions when manure is collected for RNG production.

Encouraged by government policies, demand for RNG is increasing in transport sectors such as road and marine. Establishing a business in the production and supply of RNG allows Shell to continue providing customers with the fuels they need, not only today but in the future.
