Shell Energy: Powering Progress with the Houston Dash and Dynamo

Dash and Dynamo are making their home games – and the beautiful game – lower carbon,2 lighting every match at Shell Energy Stadium with a 100% renewable electricity plan from Shell Energy.1

Texas is synonymous with football. American football. Tailgating, cheerleaders, jerseys, face painting and being incredibly passionate about your team.

Then, in 2005, a different kind of professional “football” made its return to Houston with Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. In 2014, the Houston Dash made their debut as the ninth club for the National Women’s Soccer League. Yellow and red cards, drum processions, goals, and equally passionate fans emerged.

Diehards for the Houston Dash and Houston Dynamo FC cheer on their team in the 20,000 plus seat Shell Energy Stadium, decked out in signature orange – with a dash of blue, for Dash fans. Unbeknownst to most of those fans holding their breath as the clock ticks, the electricity plan powering the bright lights, the match, and their enthusiasm is 100 percent renewable.1

The Dynamo and Dash have committed to solutions aimed at reducing emissions, while allowing fans to continue to enjoy the excitement, entertainment, cheers, and camaraderie they’ve come to love.

We’re proud to work with the Club on delivering decarbonization solutions, just as we offer 100 percent renewable electricity plans to homeowners in Houston and across Texas. I’m excited for our teams to continue to build on the positive legacy of the Club in Houston through the wide range of initiatives both at the stadium and in the broader community.

Home field advantage

Shell Energy Stadium will be outfitted with a raft of energy-efficiency measures including LED lighting and HVAC improvements, with power across the whole stadium supplied by a 100% renewable electricity plan now, and in the future from new, on-site solar panels.

“We really think about every single piece of this facility and how to improve it,” says Jessica O’Neill, Houston Dash President & HDFC COO. Along with Shell Energy, we are continuing to push the boundaries and looking for ways to not only meet but hopefully exceed our sustainability goals.”

Players and staff with electric vehicles will have an opportunity to charge their cars at new EV charging stations near the field. Similarly, Shell Energy will work with the Houston Dynamo Football Club, the teams’ parent organization, to plant a tree for every game the Dynamo or Dash wins as part of a “Wins for Trees” program, extending the impact of the solutions into the community long after the final whistle

Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions by 2026 might sound like a lofty goal, but not to the soccer clubs that build their matches around that one spectacular goal to get the fans on their feet.
