Cajun Coral Fortifies Louisiana’s Coast While Boosting Marine Life

Natrx’s innovative 3D-printed reefs are creating a living shoreline to protect Louisiana’s coastal communities, economy, and critical energy infrastructure from threat of coastal land loss.

Tyler Ortego’s childhood was spent fishing and trapping crabs in Louisiana’s Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. He fondly recalls camping on isolated patches of land off the coast, known as game warden camps. Even then, he wondered why these camps were disconnected from the mainland.

By the time Tyler was a graduate student at Louisiana State University, the game warden camps had disappeared into the ocean. He quickly realized coastal land loss was leaving communities and businesses increasingly vulnerable to tropical storms.

When those storms roll in – the waves, the wind, the surge – it’s right there. The Gulf is in people’s backyards.

Determined to protect the marshes and wetlands he cherished as a child, Tyler co-founded Natrx, Inc. (“Natrx”), a company dedicated to coastal protection. In 2019, Natrx received a Shell GameChanger grant and later partnered with Danos, an energy services provider, to develop and deploy custom reef modules nicknamed “Cajun Coral.” These 3-D printed structures are designed to offer resilient storm protection, improve water quality, and restore marine habitats.

Through collaborations with companies like Natrx, Shell is helping to fortify Louisiana’s coastal communities and businesses against coastal land loss, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Cajun Coral also provides a habitat for oysters, barnacles, and other marine life, supporting local fishing and oyster industries. As water flows through the reefs, oysters are nourished, and sediments are deposited, encouraging new marsh growth. Over time, the protection offered by the reefs becomes stronger and more resilient.

Besides storm protection, oysters also act as natural water filters, cleaning algae from the water. This cleaner water can support abundant underwater grasses, creating a stable bottom and a safe habitat for crabs, scallops, and fish.

Working with Mother Nature to support energy security

Natrx’s living shoreline solutions play a crucial role in energy security by safeguarding the critical energy infrastructure along the Gulf Coast. For a sense of what that means, 14% of the US’s crude oil production and 5% of its natural gas dry production is produced in the Gulf of America. A majority of oil production is transported via pipeline to the coast. At the same time, nearly half of America’s petroleum refining capacity – where motor fuels and other products are produced -- sits along the Gulf Coast.

By advancing nature-based coastal protection, Natrx has deployed over 50,000 tons of biogenic living shoreline solutions, working with Shell and others to protect and restore Louisiana’s coast.
