Shell Experience at Deer Park’s 125th Anniversary Celebration
Jan 21, 2018
November 4, Shell and the City of Deer Park, along with Deer Park ISD and the Chamber of Commerce, partnered on the City’s 125th anniversary celebration.
The celebration included the Shell Experience, walking through the past, present and future of Shell Deer Park, complete with food trucks, face painters, the Shell 7 Mile Perimeter band and country artist RaeLynn headlining the night.
“This city and the site really have journeyed together for nearly nine decades,” said Barry Klein, Shell Deer Park General Manager. “When the City of Deer Park told us about this 125th anniversary celebration, we knew we wanted to take part because this is a special place, and our site is so proud to be part of this community’s rich history.”
Deer Park has a deep connection to preserving its history as the birthplace of Texas which Shell showcased in the experience’s Past area. This area also displayed artifacts from the site’s earlier years. In the Present area, community members were able to take a virtual tour of Shell Deer Park while the Future area housed some of the site’s community partners as well as the global commitment for sustainable operations.
“We’re proud of our history with this wonderful city and look forward to our future together,” Klein continued.
This video highlights the 125th Anniversary of Deer Park Celebration Concert as various leaders in the Deer Park community describe the incredible partnership and positive impact Shell Deer Park has made on the City since the site started in 1929.

A sign blows in the wind with the word “Welcome” emblazoned across it in large red lettering. The camera cuts to a shot of members of the public, in a car park, walking towards the camera, smiling.
The camera closes in on a yellow sign with the Shell pectin and white font reading, “125 SHELL & DEER PARK PARTNERSHIP. Welcome to the Shell Experience”.
A man and woman walk past the camera, while others are shown in the background. Some are standing, whilst others seated in white chairs with virtual reality headsets on. A black sign is propped up behind them with the words “Shell Deer Park, 360° Site Tour” printed on it.
The camera cuts to a large yellow sign with white font: “We power progress together by manufacturing the energy products that fuel our world and are the solutions for our future. WE ARE DEER PARK.”
The next two shots are still-images of Shell employees in yellow T-shirts with a large, red Shell pectin printed on them, standing with members of the public in a circle, in the carpark outside the venue.
The Shell pectin, large and vibrant, is pictured on a board with a yellow background.
A series of shots are shown of people taking in the various Shell stands, with Shell employees on hand to explain the various displays. In one scene, a couple stand behind cardboard cut-outs of red Shell suits, giving the impression that they are wearing the suits and are Shell employees. A Shell employee takes their photo with a camera phone. A couple stand in front of a quilt to have their photo taken. The quilt has a sign on it reading, “1982 – 2017. DEER PARK HISTORICAL QUILT. CELEBRATING 125 YEARS”. The camera cuts to others observing the different stands.

I want the people in Deer Park to realise how important Shell has been to us as a city from the very beginning. I think a lot of people don't realise that and, without Shell, we wouldn't be here.

The camera cuts to a young girl with a virtual reality headset on and then to a band performing. Next, we see other children enjoying the event: some children jumping around on a bouncy castle, and one girl is shown high-fiving a man in military uniform in front of an inflatable stand with two basketball nets.

It's a partnership with Shell, Deer Park ISD, the city of Deer Park. It's probably the best we've ever done. Shell coming in with the experience and DP ISD hosting, and then Raylynn coming in from Baytown and the Chamber of Commerce putting everything together, it's been incredible.

What we're trying to do today is actually spend more time helping the community understand what happens inside our fence. A lot of times there's a mystique about it and we just opened up today and said, "You know what? How about we just show them all about what goes on inside our site?"

[Barry Klein]
From virtual-reality tours of the site, where people can actually drive through the site and see what happens, to understanding what our products do, to understanding how we operate the site. I mean, we've tried to showcase all of that here today.

125th Anniversary Celebration

[Sherry Garrison]
Deer Park was founded in 1892 by a gentleman by the name of Simeon H West. And he named it Deer Park for the large number of deer that roamed the coastal prairies. But, unfortunately, a lot of cold weather and a hurricane in 1900 pretty much ended that.

So, Deer Park became a bit of a ghost town. But in 1928, Shell bought some land from Deer Park and they started to build their refinery. And that is what brought Deer Park back. And that's really what started the partnership between Deer Park and Shell.
The camera pans around the room, showing various exhibits, including a large red wagon with a yellow Shell container on top.
[Amanda Accardo]
This community is quite passionate about their history, you know, because they have the distinction of the birthplace of Texas.

They have a historical committee that has really honed in on the history of this city. And we had the Historical Society at our site that used to host a museum, so we could bring out those assets that were in the museum and tell the story of, really, how the site and the city grew up together. With looking back at the past, it also begs the question, of where are you going, which is quite handy, because Shell is all about making the future. And so we thought maybe we would have this idea of going past, present and future. And so that's kind of what is here today for all the citizens of Deer Park to go through. Also, what our business is at Shell, so that we kind of take away the mystique, and then where we are headed as a global company and how Deer Park plays a role in that.
More shots of people taking in the various Shell displays and activities.
[Barry Klein]
What we're trying to do today is take down the big, high-level purpose that you get from Royal Dutch
about more and cleaner energy and being a force for good and, really, operationalising that at the local level.

That's what we're trying to do. Our message has been pretty consistent. You know, we want to be a welcome neighbour, we want to be around here for a long time, we want to be a force for good and we know we power progress to a better world. The folks on our site do amazing work. It's noble jobs that power our industry, but it also powers progress in the world. An example is when you go to one of our tents and you do the virtual-reality tour and you find all the products in your house that come from our industry, and the products that we produce. We feel proud about that. Our community feels proud about that. We want to celebrate that together.

I don't know if many people know, but the very first board meetings were held at the Shell Administration Building. They're constantly doing things for us, our outdoor learning centre, working with the Education Foundation, working with the STIM programme, the science programme. Incredible partnership. We've been working on this for over a year. Totally natural. One of the best things we've ever done and very exciting.

Today's been a wonderful event. Every stage of this planning, and all the effort, Shell's been involved and participatory, contributing both the man hours and also financially toward this. But more than that, I know that they wanted it to be a special event for the whole community. We would not have been able to have a headlining act, such as Raylynn, without Shell. The opening band were Shell's employee band, 7 Mile Perimeter, which was very special. If you just look around at all the activities, the events, it wouldn't have happened without Shell.
We see a close-up of a blue display reading “Staying Connected”, with a large wheel, which participants need to spin. There are various prizes written on the wheel.

The community is the people that work on our site. When we talk about the community, we are talking about our employees because that’s who it is.
[Amanda Accardo]
You want other people to tell their story, as well, and so we asked our community partners that we do social investment grants with if they would come out and showcase what they're all about and our grants that have helped them in their journey.

And so today we have a number of folks from local Emergency Planning Committee, the Deer Park Chamber with their app, the Deer Park Education Foundation talking about the fun run, Armand Bayou Nature Centre, the Deer Park Prairie, and PetrochemWorks, which is all about our workforce development in the area. So it's neat for them to share their story and engage the community in a way that really does show how we are making the future together as industry and community in the municipality.
We hope folks walk away with the sense that Shell really does care. They care about being a good neighbour. And we do believe that we can be a force for good. We want to make sure that we're working with the community to be that force for good.
The camera cuts to various sequences: a sign blows in the wind with the word “Welcome” emblazoned across it in large red lettering, and Deer Park and Shell workers are shown around the event, the band perform onstage, before cheering erupts from the audience.
