Directing my energy where it matters most

“Shell is coming up as fast as possible on the diversity learning curve.”

My neurodiverse background

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a young child. I also have a learning disability with the inability to sound blend, so spelling and writing is difficult at times. I can’t always get my thoughts onto paper fast enough.

Joined as an intern, enjoying the diverse work today

I started with Shell as an intern during my PhD. It was a lot of fun because I enjoyed working on meaningful projects. It was a chance to do something technical, in depth, and collaborate with people with different skill sets. It’s why I’m still with Shell today.

I found a career that suits me. Geology just fits my brain - it's the mash up of math and the sciences: physics, chemistry, and biological mass extinction events. At Shell I get to work with reservoir engineers, well engineers, geophysicists, petrophysicists, geo mechanics…and learn from them. Expanding my knowledge and expertise in different fields allows me to better contribute to big projects. Working in a very multicultural team means I get to hear a lot of interesting and diverse ideas.

Shell enables me to thrive

I’m like a ball of energy at home and at work. I work best when managers let me run with projects, ‘nudge’ me in the right direction, and support me to use my energy to pull the team along with me. I’m happy that the leadership team at Shell enables me to do that.

Most of the time I work from home. I occasionally go into the office for big integrated meetings, but I'm more efficient at home where I can focus on my tasks and get more work done faster without interruptions This has allowed me to deliver impactful work to Shell. I’ve found this rewarding both personally and professionally.

I give my energy back to others

At Shell, I get to direct my energy where it matters most. I’m helping to develop the energy solutions of tomorrow – while helping others and raising awareness of ADHD. I’ve had the chance to mentor young colleagues, and others with ADHD, and I encourage them to not be afraid to ask questions. Using my experience, I’ll continue to advocate for others, too.

It’s important that people realize that with neurodiversity, not one size fits all, there isn’t one solution to an issue. Shell is helping to change that. One of the key factors has been our internal diversity and inclusion group, enABLE, where I serve as VP. Yet although there’s still lots to learn, I feel secure in an environment where I’m able to be the best version of myself.
