Our Work
At Shell Pipeline Company, we understand the importance of safe and reliable pipeline operations. Our commitment is to operate responsibly and sustainably, prioritizing the safety of our communities and the environment.
Committed to safety and reliability
- Safety First: We prioritize safety in all our operations, guided by our core values of honesty, integrity, and respect.
- Experienced Operations: With more than a century of expertise, we bring proven technical and operational excellence to every project and operational asset.
- Community Commitment: We are dedicated to being a good neighbor, actively engaging with and supporting the communities near our assets.
Pipelines are one of the safest ways to transport the energy we use daily. We are committed to maintaining this safety through every phase of our assets’ lifecycle—designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and decommissioning. Our focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
Projects
At Shell Pipeline Company, we are focused on safety and quality at every step of the construction process. From planning and design to pipe manufacturing, transportation, assembly, and system start-up, we maintain the highest standards. We work with local communities and landowners, taking into consideration their feedback and concerns in the project process.
Learn more about the project construction process.
Operational excellence
We maintain our focus on safe, secure and compliant operations once an asset is built and operational.
As we coordinate transportation and storage of more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil, refined products, chemicals and NGLs annually, we also take steps to preserve the integrity of our pipelines, storage tanks and facilities to help keep them safe, reliable and environmentally sound.
This work includes:
- Conducting risk and integrity assessments by performing scheduled inspections and integrating data from numerous sources.
- Conducting frequent ground or aerial surveys along our pipeline routes, looking for any excavations or abnormal operating conditions.
- Performing ongoing maintenance and damage prevention activities and looking for opportunities to identify and mitigate emerging risks.
Additionally, our systems are continuously operated and monitored 24 hours a day by our Houston Control Center. Our highly trained controllers are integral in every aspect of operations and can swiftly implement protective measures if a release or other issue is detected. The systems and hardware within the control center are designed to provide redundancy and security to all pipeline operations.
While our focus is on prevention of emergencies, we are fully prepared to respond promptly in the unlikely event of an incident. Our team works closely with local emergency responders, consistently communicating, planning, and drilling, to ensure our response efforts are well-coordinated and effective.

Asset Integrity.
[Visuals]
A shot from inside a warehouse looking out of the doors as a forklift truck drives out and a man in a blue shirt and a white hard hat (Pat Rome) walks towards the doors. Cut to a shot of Pat Rome walking along a gravel road, followed by the forklift truck. Cut to Pat Rome outside the warehouse, leaning on a large white pipe to write on some paper. Cut to a sweeping drone shot of a yellow oil rig in a dark ocean. Red and white cranes protrude into the air. Cut to a head-on shot of large white pipes stretching along the ground into the distance.
[Pat Rome]
Here at our Gibson Facility, we have oil coming in from the Gulf of Mexico and it’s shipped to market downstream of here.
[Visuals]
A head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome against a blurred industrial background. He is wearing a white hard hat with the shell logo printed on the front. A white text box with black writing appears in the bottom left corner of the screen.
[Text display]
Pat Rome. Offshore Integrity Manager.
[Pat Rome]
We also run our warehousing out of this location and a fabrication shop for all of our offshore assets.
[Visuals]
Wide-angle shot of Pat Rome walking to the left of frame on a gravel road, followed by a forklift truck. Two other workers stand to the side of the forklift truck’s path. Pat Rome turns to face the forklift truck as it approaches him. In the background is a large container ship.
[Pat Rome]
Today we’re going to be launching what we call a maintenance pig into one of our pipeline systems.
[Visuals]
A man’s hands guide a large metal maintenance pig as it rolls off the forklift truck onto the gravel.
[Pat Rome]
So this is a cleaning device.
[Visuals]
Pat Rome and two other workers walk around the opening of a large white pipeline. The maintenance pig sits on the ground beside the pipe. Cut to a head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome standing in front of white pipelines.
[Pat Rome]
It’s going to remove any debris or any sitting water in the pipeline that could potentially cause corrosion and give us an integrity problem.
[Visuals]
Close-up shot of gloved hands undoing a bolt on the top of a large white pipeline. Cut to close-up of Pat Rome as he feeds a long metal stake into the top of the pipe. Cut to another worker pulling on a large which lever on top of the pipe as Pat Rome watches. Cut to Pat Rome opening a large hatch at the end of the white pipeline and reaching inside.
[Pat Rome]
So it’s going to go approximately 30 miles downstream of our current location, and from there, we’ll pull it out of the pipeline.
[Visuals]
Wide-angle shot of three men walking up to the maintenance pig. They all bend down, grab the pig and begin to lift it. Cut to a head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome standing in front of white pipelines. Cut back to the three men as they manoeuvre the maintenance pig into the pipeline entrance. Cut to a head-on shot of the pipeline entrance, as the three men all use a long metal pole to push the maintenance pig deeper into the pipeline. Cut to a different angle shot of the three men, as Pat Rome closes the hatch on the pipeline and another worker walks away with the metal pole. Cut to a close-up of a red and white warning sign on the pipeline which reads, “Danger. Pressurized Equipment. Release of pressure if not closed properly. Ensure clamp rings are fully closed before pressurizing the barrel.” Cut to the three men standing around the pipeline as Pat Rome replaces a cap on the top of the pipe.
[Pat Rome]
In the early days, they would throw barbed wire, anything they had laying around, in pipes to clean them out and it would make, like, a squealing noise as it went down the pipe.
[Visuals]
A head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome standing in front of white pipelines.
[Pat Rome]
The name kind of stuck with it. I don’t know what else you would call this thing. (He laughs)
[Visuals]
A wide-angle shot of a gravel compound with the white pipeline to the centre right of frame. Pat Rome stands with his back to the camera in the bottom right of frame, while two other workers stand top left of frame and another stands next to the pipeline.
[Pat Rome]
Open the barrel valve and open the kicker.
[Background music plays]
Pulsing, upbeat music
[Visuals]
Sweeping drone shot of marshland against a blue sky. Cut to a different drone shot of marshes. Cut to drone shot of large expanse of water with marshland either side. Cut to a head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome against a blurred industrial background.
[Pat Rome]
Here in coastal Louisiana, another threat to our pipeline systems is coastal erosion.
[Visuals]
Wide-angle shot of a large yellow excavator as it swings around on an outcrop of land surrounded by water. A bridge can be seen in the distance.
[Pat Rome]
We utilise 3D-printed rocks. They slow the sediment down in the water, creating more cover on the pipelines, and also a good environmental solution, because the oysters attach to them and we actually breed more oysters in the area.
[Visuals]
Pat Rome and another worker walk through a yard with large rocks either side of them. Close-up shot of the large rocks sitting on wooden pallets on the ground. Cut to close-up of a pipeline covered in sediment, barnacles and seaweed. Cut to a head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome against a blurred industrial background. Cut to a shot of an industrial compound surrounded by a barbed wire fence. In front of the fence is a grey box mounted on a pipe coming up from the ground.
[Pat Rome]
Cathodic protection is systems that are installed on ours pipelines to eliminate and minimise corrosion.
[Visuals]
Close-up shot of the grey box in front of the barbed wire fence. The box has a padlock on the left side. Cut to a head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome against a blurred industrial background. Cut to a rear shot of Pat Rome as he unlocks the padlock on the box. Cut to a side-on shot of Pat Rome as he unlocks the padlock.
[Pat Rome]
What we’ve got here is a rectifier.
[Visuals]
Close up shot of the inside of the grey box, showing various wires, meters and buttons. Cut to shot of a network of large white pipes going into the ground.
[Pat Rome]
What that does is it neutralises the electrical charge on the pipeline.
[Visuals]
A head-and-shoulders shot of Pat Rome against a blurred industrial background.
[Pat Rome]
Asset integrity is made up of multiple facets here on the pipeline systems.
[Visuals]
Shot of a network of large white pipelines and valves running across the ground and into a sheet-metal shelter.
[Pat Rome]
All of these things drive our need to be regulatory compliant and also to ensure that we have safe operations on our systems.
[Visuals]
Shot of Pat Rome outside a warehouse, leaning on a large white pipe to write on some paper. Cut to close-up of Pat’s hands as he writes on a printed form. A yellow monitor and green gloves lie next to his hands. Cut to a wider angle as he turns over the pages of the form and looks into the camera.
[Pat Rome]
Safety is paramount here, personal safety especially.
[Visuals]
Sweeping drone shot of a yellow oil rig in a dark ocean. Red and white cranes protrude into the air. Cut to another drone shot, this time a slightly wider angle.
[Pat Rome]
That’s how we continue to deliver oil and gas here in the Gulf Coast.
