February 1, 2020 Update: UnitedHealthcare (UHC) and Houston Methodist (Methodist) Contractual Relationship

UnitedHealthcare (UHC) and Houston Methodist (Methodist) have been unable to reach agreement on a contract. For non-Medicare retirees enrolled in the HSM options, Methodist facilities moved to out-of-network status effective January 1, 2020. In addition, UHC has informed Shell that a decision has been made to move Methodist physicians out-of-network effective February 1, 2020. However, to mitigate the impact on participants and their care, UHC will continue to process claims for care received from Methodist physicians at the in-network rate through March 31, 2020. No additional action is required by you for care received from a Methodist physician prior to April 1, 2020. Care received from a Methodist facility after December 31, 2019, or a Methodist physician after March 31, 2020, will be processed at the out-of-network rate.

This change does not impact benefits for those enrolled in the Medicare Complementary or Medicare Advantage PPO options.

Shell continues to be supportive of the ongoing efforts by the two organizations to reach an agreement that will restore in-network access to Methodist facilities and physicians for Shell participants. 

However, we recognize that the current outcome of these negotiations impacts all of you who chose to enroll in the HSM options for 2020 based on the in-network status of Methodist facilities and physicians. Given the significance of this change, we will open a special enrollment period in March for those Houston-based HSM participants who wish to revisit their medical plan election for the remainder of 2020.  Information about how to participate in this special enrollment period will be communicated to our Houston-based HSM participants by the Shell Benefits Service Center in February.  

Shell and UHC are in ongoing discussions to align on an appropriate Continuity of Care program to support the needs of participants with certain illnesses and/or active treatments. Through the Continuity of Care program, eligible participants may continue receiving care through their Methodist physician or facility at the in-network level of benefits for a certain time period. Please call the UHC Customer Care team for additional information*.
