In late October, motorsports drivers and enthusiasts poured into Austin, Texas from across the globe for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, held at Circuit of the Americas.
To kick off the week of racing, Shell surprised customers at a local Shell branded retail station with guest appearances from three of the world’s most talented racecar drivers. Scuderia Ferrari four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, joined by Team Penske drivers NASCAR’s Daytona 500 Champion Joey Logano and 2017 IndyCar Champion Josef Newgarden, helped consumers fill up their cars with Shell V-Power® NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline, gave away Shell Gift Cards and raced miniature race cars on a Shell and Pennzoil branded miniature racetrack.
After engaging with fans and station site staff, the drivers headed over to Circuit of the Americas to “drive” in an entirely new way. Vettel, Logano and Newgarden practiced their golf swings at Topgolf CRUSH at COTA to compete for the best drive, and the trio also shared insights around precision and differences in their respective series, including the value of having cutting-edge Shell V-Power race fuel in Formula 1 and Pennzoil lubricants with PurePlus technology across all three series and the impact it has on their races.
This year, Shell V-Power® race fuel and a customized blend Pennzoil® with PurePlusTM Technology lubricant delivered 23.3 percent of the total efficiency gain of Scuderia Ferrari’s power unit since the end of the 2014 season. This means Scuderia Ferrari can go over half a second per lap faster with the same amount of fuel.
The 2017 Formula 1 cars require more power due to ‘draggier’ designs, and because drivers spend longer at full throttle, efficiency is now more important than ever. Shell must deliver maximum performance to Scuderia Ferrari from the fuel, as well as from engine lubrication, to enable the cars and drivers to perform at their peak during each race of the season. Such gains in efficiency have already helped power Scuderia Ferrari to four race wins and eight further podium places in the first half of the 2017 season.
“Our performance so far this season relies on all parts of the puzzle working together, and of course the fuels and lubricants from Shell are playing their part – stats like this show how their expertise contributes to give us an advantage on the track,” said Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Ferrari Driver and current series leader.
