The deep-water era began more than forty years ago when engineers, scientists and explorers came together and reimagined what was possible for offshore oil and gas production in the waters of the US Gulf of Mexico (GoM). With our Cognac platform in 1978, Shell was the first company to produce oil in more than 1000 feet of water.

Since this engineering feat that redefined offshore oil and gas development, we have continued to achieve exceptional technological milestones in the design, construction and operation of world-class oil and gas producing assets in varying depths of water. As the leading deep-water oil and gas producer in the GoM, our operations play a critical role in Powering Progress and our US GoM production is among the lowest GHG intensity in the world for producing oil.
