I work in a group called deepwater projects doing chemical engineering things similar to what I did in school, but with less hand-written calculations.
My favorite part of the Shell Graduate Programme is that it’s a good balance of Shell-directed and self-directed learning -- so you can get grounded in the business you’re hired into, but also focus on other things that interests you.
Since I’m relatively new, I’ve been able to provide a fresh set of eyes and challenge the way we’ve always done things in several aspects of projects I’ve worked on from safety, design, and efficiency perspectives.
I’m sometimes afraid of being vulnerable in exposing a knowledge gap in a company full of intelligent people. But by asking the “naïve question”, it has always lead me to learn more and sometimes resulted in an improved outcome for the project.
I’m really excited by the work I’ve done as the National President of Shell’s New Professionals Network. I want the newest members of the Shell community to feel that they can be themselves and bring their best selves to work the second they walk through our doors.
Whether in my day job, in my Shell-based extracurriculars, the external conferences and workshops I’ve attended, or the Shell-sponsored community service events I’ve taken part of; my experience is that Shell is able to support me provided that I’m able to communicate why it’s important.
I’m excited both by what we are doing in the green energy space as we strive to reduce our net carbon footprint, and also what we are doing to provide affordable, accessible energy to low-income people all over the world as we journey through the energy transition.
Because of Shell’s flexible working arrangements, I have the opportunity to mentor aspiring engineers whose racial and gender identities are underrepresented in the field, providing the role model I’d never gotten to see growing up.
