Real Stories, (Real)ationships: How a Polymer Supplier Should Act

Small Business Needs a Stable Polymer Supply–Shell Polymers Delivers

Shell Polymers is built on the idea of (Real)ationships

–that means being a polymer supplier that listens to customers and puts their needs first. This philosophy informs every aspect of how we do business. It’s why we spent so much time listening to converters as we planned our plant. It’s why we built an incredible customer service team and invested in technology to help make sure our customers get the right resin the first time, every time. And it’s why our team of technical experts and the Applications Hall let us help converters test new products and jump on new opportunities.

Our (Real)ationships with converters aren’t just hypothetical. Our real stories page

highlights the partnerships we’ve forged with converters, especially smaller businesses and organizations from our own backyard in Western PA. Here are some examples!

Shell Polymers and United Dairy

Founded in 1954, United Dairy is a family-owned business and an important part of western PA’s dairy industry. But as it looked to grow further, it faced several challenges, one of the biggest being the need to balance better quality packaging, lowering its carbon footprint, and delivering locally sourced milk to its customers.

Fortunately, Shell Polymers was able to help

. Our Monaca, PA plant is only 60 miles from where United Dairy makes their packaging, making us the ideal polymer supplier for reducing emission and transportation costs with recyclable HDPE resin. This shorter supply chain also reduces the risk of product contamination at the terminal, ensuring customers can enjoy delicious, fresh milk!

Shell Polymers and Rocheleau Tool & Die Co

Rocheleau Tool & Die Co is almost 90 years old, and makes great blow-molding machines, but saw an opportunity in manufacturing blow-molded dairy bottles themselves.

Taking a chance on a new business venture isn’t easy. Rocheleau needed a diverse, reliable polymer supply and flexibility in case some suppliers had issues. They also needed to ensure transportation costs were as low as possible. Most of all, they needed more than just a supplier: they wanted a reliable partner they knew they could count on.

Shell Polymers was that reliable partner

. Compared to suppliers near the Gulf Coast, Shell Polymers is only 600 miles from Rocheleau in Fitchburg, MA–less than a day’s drive. Our technical service team worked with Rocheleau to do a trial run with our resin under real-world conditions, helping fine-tune everything to ensure it works well with their needs.

The results have been great for Rocheleau; Shell Polymers’ location has allowed us to cover for other resin shipments delayed by weather conditions, and transportation costs have plunged by 2/3rds–without compromising on quality.
