Production Operator
With the opening of its new polyethylene plant in Monaca, USA, Shell Polymers has been hiring a team of industry experts, aka Polymer Pioneers and Polymer Pros, who have a proven track record in polyethylene. Production Operator Terence Gettings shares about his role at Shell Polymers and reveals four ways in which he believes the organization is designed to deliver an unrivaled customer experience.
In a recent Polymer Profile we profiled Production Unit Manager, Jeremy Cross, just one of our seasoned, hand-picked industry professionals that have spent decades in senior operating positions at other polyethylene production plants. But the diverse Shell Polymers production team also includes recent graduates – like Terence – that have been selected for the vitality, ingenuity and pioneering spirit that they bring.

A Day-in-the-Life of a Production Operator
While the plant is still under construction, Terence is spending a lot of time training and becoming virtually qualified on all three polyethylene units, which is where he will be posted after start-up. Terence explains, “ Right now, as we continue to get ready for start-up, I’m spending a lot of time supporting new operators in any way I can, and also creating operator training material.”

An Unrivaled Customer Experience
Creating the unrivaled customer experience is a common goal: everyone at the site is pulling towards this in their own way. The way production operators contribute to it is by understanding the process. By properly understanding the process, operators play a vital role in helping reduce down time and improve productivity and, therefore, driving up supply reliability, which is critical for customers.

According to Terence, “there are many things that set Shell Polymers apart from other polyethylene suppliers to him, but one he’d especially like to highlight is the culture. For example, across the site, everyone is encouraged to take pride in completing their activities with excellence and to deliver on their promises. Employees are also urged to collaborate, to seek out new ideas and perspectives, and to bring ideas and solutions. That makes it a really inspiring place to be.”
Terence’s four ways Shell Polymers will deliver an unrivaled customer experience
Our culture encourages everyone across the site to take pride in completing their activities with excellence and to deliver on their promises.
To help ensure that we can deliver polyethylene when we say we will, we have our own rail system with over 3000 freight cars.
Our strategic location is close to the majority of PE converters in North America, which means that we’ll be able to get polyethylene to customers quickly and reliably.
We have industry veterans that have been in the industry for years – the Polymer Pioneers such as Dan Falla – who take the time to explain technical topics to the operations personnel.
