Innovative Polyethylene Production Processes

Shell Polymers recognizes the importance of finding creative ways to produce polyethylene efficiently while reducing disruptions, which is why the new Monaca plant will feature smart inspection technology, automated on-site and off-site inventory tracking capabilities, and in-house technology expertise to foster collaborative experimentation. The new plant’s application hall will allow converters and manufacturers to troubleshoot machine problems, design innovative polyethylene parts, and test new machinery and technologies

Our Rich History in the Chemicals Industry

To fully understand Shell Polymers’ industry prowess, it’s important to know Shell’s level of knowledge in the chemicals space. Founded in 1929, Shell Polymers’ parent company, Shell Chemicals’, has been producing a range of base chemicals and intermediate chemicals such as ethylene, propylene, solvents, detergent alcohols, ethylene oxide, ethylene glycol, and more for decades.

While our plant may be new, our polyethylene expertise is not. Shell Polymers has dedicated time and resources analyzing the top challenges that plastics converters face, building a team of experts to best support manufacturers, and developing relationships with converters that encourage streamlined production processes and greater supply chain transparency.

So the industry is changing. There is quite a large span, you know, we have a lot of individuals that are sort of like they've been in the industry a long time, they’re very experienced. And then we have a gap; and we have a lot of younger people, and we’re seeing that reflected both in our workforce but also in the customer. And ultimately we want to be able to mirror, you know, what the customer does. I also think that creativity that comes from diversity is really important. So, we have people in my team who have different upbringings, they come from different countries, they’ve had different work experiences. All of those things bring a hugely different perspective to what we are trying to do, and they really drive creative problem solutions and really just generate a much, much better product.

Entrepreneurial Approach Transcript

So, we are trying to create an entrepreneurial culture inside Shell, which is obviously a huge multinational corporation. The benefit to a customer of us being able to mix that entrepreneurial spirit with the backing of a company like Shell, is that we’re able to be nimble—but we’re able to do big and bold things because we have that financial backing and that experience.

The first thing that we are doing is we’re bringing in a lot of experts from across the industry, from many different companies, all with strong polymer backgrounds who bring different perspectives to the team.

The second thing, though, is we are also working with a lot of external companies, a variety of different consultants who bring lots of different ideas and experiences.

And then the third is one thing you have to do in an entrepreneurial culture is really cultivate a beginner’s mindset. We’ve been very deliberate about bringing people in who either come from very different industries or don’t have a lot of industry experience. They are really able to ask the questions, “Why?” Why are things the way that they are and they bring a lot of challenges and ultimately, it’s through that challenge that we drive the change.
