Meet Our Pro

Brooke Gill

Process Engineer

With the opening of its new polyethylene plant in Monaca, USA, Shell Polymers has been hiring a team of industry experts, aka Polymer Pioneers and Polymer Pros, who have a proven track record in polyethylene. In this profile, Process Engineer Brooke Gill shares about her role at Shell Polymers and her top-four process engineering tips.

A Day In the Life of a Process Engineer

Brooke is currently a member of the asset team, which commissions, starts up, runs and maintains the new site. She provides technical assurance for the commissioning and start-up activities and is the focal point for proactive technical monitoring.

Brooke was also involved in selecting the plant’s technology and defining the project scope, and she worked intensively on the detailed design. The day of the final investment decision was a very emotional one because it meant this was really happening!

According to Brooke, “Another big day for me was when we first made “virtual polyethylene” during our model acceptance test. This is the model that runs behind the dynamic simulator that we are now using to train our operators. Now, I’m looking forward to the day we make our first real polyethylene!”

Brooke’s top-four process engineering tips

  • Engineer for a consistent product from the beginning.

  • Remove barriers so that operations and engineers can work together; silos are for pellets not people!

  • Troubleshoot with data.

  • Proactively monitor: find small, fix small. Being one step ahead of potential problems helps us to ensure consistent and reliable product supply.

Delivering an Unrivaled Customer Experience

Brooke helps to create an unrivaled customer experience by providing technical support to ensure manufacturing excellence. To Brooke, manufacturing excellence means everyone goes home safe, we uphold our license to operate, and our customers are satisfied.

In Brooke’s opinion, there are several aspects but the one that really stands out to her Shell Polymers’ dedication to product consistency. Because it’s a really important factor for customers, Shell Polymers places a huge emphasis on it, so we’ve engineered the site accordingly.

“We’ve engineered the site to ensure unrivaled product consistency.”

Being an avid diver, Brooke has seen some amazing things! But, Brooke shared one of the most excited she has ever been was when she saw a high-density polyethylene pipe in the Philippines being used to get fresh water to some of the smaller islands. She smiled as she explained how she grabbed her husband, pointed frantically at the pipe and indicated for him to take a picture. It took him a minute to realize that I was excited about the pipe and not some small seahorse he couldn’t see!
