MP2 Energy helps Texas elementary school achieve net-zero
Richard J. Lee Elementary achieves LEED Gold certification and becomes first net-zero elementary school in Texas.
Client
Coppell ISD: Richard J. Lee Elementary School
Project Highlights
- 1,096 solar panels
- 340 kW generation capacity
- ~$30K savings/year

The challenge
When planning a new elementary school in Irving, Texas, Coppell Independent School District (ISD) wanted a green power solution that would help them achieve LEED Gold certification, while reliably supplying their unique electricity usage patterns.
The solution
Shell-owned subsidiary MP2 Energy worked with Coppell ISD to design and implement a tailored distributed energy solution that includes 340 kW of on-site solar generation and demand response technology.

The results
Richard J. Lee Elementary School became the first net-zero elementary school in Texas and met the strict requirements for the designation of LEED Gold from the US Green Building Council.
By combining distributed energy and demand response from MP2, the school is able to feed any excess electricity it produces back into the grid to help power the surrounding community. MP2 then uses the financial benefit of the excess grid settlements to offset the cost of any additional electricity the school may need when on-site generation isn’t enough.
With this solution, the school district is saving approximately $30,000 per year in electricity costs.
"Energy Academy is a much-needed, immersive academic experience that will help students explore and learn more about Earth's renewable resources. MP2 is proud to support this project and we believe schools will greatly benefit from the rich learning materials."
