Work Continues on Establishing PC-12 Oil Category
Transport Topics (March 29, 2024)
Progress is ongoing in developing Proposed Category-12 (PC-12) diesel engine oils, aiming to replace current API CK-4 and FA-4 oils by 2027. Karin Haumann, chairperson of the API's new category development team and OEM technical manager for Shell Global Solutions, highlights the challenge of enhancing engine oil technology while maintaining compatibility with existing and diverse heavy-duty equipment. The story also discusses the benefits of FA-4 oils, noting improved fuel economy and efficiency in high-temperature, high-shear environments and the potential for more widespread future adoption.

Karin Haumann, OEM technical manager at Shell Rotella, emphasizes the advantages of using low viscosity engine oils in diesel trucks, particularly during cold weather. Higher viscosity oils, such as 15W-40, have a slower flow rate at lower temperatures, which can delay the lubrication of engine parts. Conversely, low viscosity oils like 10W-30 allow for quicker flow in cold climates, ensuring better protection and reducing wear on engine components. These oils not only safeguard the engine but also lessen the load on the battery and starter. They help improve fuel efficiency and prolong the vehicle’s lifespan. In extremely cold conditions, oils such as 0W-40 or 5W-40 are advisable.
