Low Viscosity Oils Provide Strong Engine Protection in Cold Operating Conditions
Waste Advantage Magazine (December 12, 2023)
Karin Haumann, OEM technical manager with Shell Rotella, discusses the importance of using low viscosity engine oils for diesel-powered trucks, especially in cold weather. In lower temperatures, high viscosity oils like 15W-40 flow more slowly, affecting rapid lubrication of engine components. Low viscosity oils, such as 10W-30, flow quicker in cold temperatures, providing better protection and reducing wear on engine parts. These oils not only protect engine components but also reduce strain on the battery and starter, enhancing fuel economy and extending vehicle lifespan. In extremely cold conditions, oils like 0W-40 or 5W-40 are recommended. It's important to consult the vehicle's manual or a professional before switching oils, as these low viscosity oils are suitable for various weather conditions and offer numerous benefits, including engine cleanliness and fuel efficiency.
Winter Readiness: Essential Coolant Checks and Preparations for Optimal Engine Performance
Fleet Maintenance (October 2023)
Brad Jordan, a Shell Lubricants specialist, emphasizes the importance of testing coolant for appropriate freeze protection before winter. A 50/50 antifreeze coolant concentrate/water mix is usually sufficient for most areas, providing freeze protection down to -34°F. In extremely cold northern regions, a 60/40 coolant mix for -60°F is advised. It's crucial to use a calibrated refractometer for accurate freeze point checks.
