Tom Rizzo: New Shell Martinez GM
Tom Rizzo, who has more than 30 years of experience at Shell, is the new general manager for the Shell Martinez Refinery. His priorities are sending workers home safely, and respecting the environment.
Tom Rizzo is the new General Manager of the Shell Oil Products U.S. Martinez Refinery, where he oversees the operations of the company’s 800 acre facility, which has more than 600 employees and can produce up to 160,000 barrels per day.
Tom comes to the Bay Area to serve in his second West Coast assignment after serving as General Manager of Shell’s Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes, Washington.
Tom supported the Martinez facility in a past role as Business Improvement Lead for Shell and also served as General Manager of the company’s Lakeland chemical facility.
Tom started his career at the Wood River Manufacturing Complex in 1981 after earning a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a master’s in Business Administration in Finance from Washington University (St. Louis).
After a number of assignments at Wood River (technical, business, and management) and a short-term assignment at Shell’s Deer Park Refinery, he moved to Shell’s American headquarters in Houston in 1992. There, he held various positions within Shell’s Manufacturing, Chemicals, Corporate, and Projects and Technology organizations.
“I am excited to be a part of the Martinez family,” Tom says. “I have been fortunate in my career to have worked with many talented people throughout the Martinez organization and have seen the site’s collective passion for excellence up close. Being a part of this team is a tremendous opportunity for me.”
Tom’s primary focus is maintaining the Martinez refinery’s focus on People and Planet – sending everyone home safely every day and continuing to show respect for our environment.
He is also committed to maintaining and improving the Martinez tradition of being a valued member of the community. Tom’s wide range of business experience will also bring considerable focus to projects and improvements that ensure the refinery remains profitable into the future.
“This is an exciting and dynamic time for our industry,” says Tom. “The refining business has undergone a significant amount of change in the past few years, and these changes bring unprecedented opportunity.
“In a century of doing business here, Shell Martinez has been at the forefront of many aspects of the industry from continuous operations to flare management, he adds. “Our charge is to take it to the next level, to find and pursue new paths forward so that the refinery can maintain its status as a trusted provider of clean fuels, a leader in safety and environmental performance, and a caring employer for the next 100 years.”
Tom has 3 grown children and lives in Martinez. In addition to his work at the refinery, Tom enjoys golf, collecting Raku pottery, and officiating high school football. Tom explains his interest in being a football official this way: “After a week at work, what better way to relax than putting on a striped shirt and being yelled at for a couple of hours.”
