He oversees the operations of the company’s 800 acre, 700-plus employee 160,000 bbd facilities in the Bay Area. Paul’s current assignment marks his third tour of duty in Martinez as part of a distinguished 30-year career with Shell.
Gabbard started his career at the Martinez refinery fresh out of college in 1981 after earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering from San Diego State University. After a number of assignments at Martinez, he moved on to Shell’s Deer Park Refinery in 1993, and then to corporate headquarters in Houston.
Gabbard returned to Martinez in 1997 as an operations manager, and was later appointed Production Manager for both the Martinez and Bakersfield refineries. He then served as Production Manager for Shell’s refinery in Los Angeles, and was later promoted to the position of General Manager of Shell’s refinery and chemical facilities in Scotford, Canada.
“I am excited to be back in Martinez,” Gabbard says. “This is where I want to be. People in industry have affinities for different sites, and mine is for Martinez.”
Gabbard’s focus is maintaining the Martinez refinery’s world class safety record and even improving it; while keeping the refinery on the path of continuous environmental improvement and service to the community. He is also focused on improving efficiency and eliminating waste in the refinery process.
“This is an exciting time to be in the energy industry,” says Gabbard. “In addition to addressing society’s energy needs, we play a key role addressing the climate challenge and improving the way we do business in any number of ways.”
Gabbard and his wife, Deirdre, live in the East Bay and have four sons. In addition to his work at the refinery, Paul enjoys backpacking, golf and baseball. His passion for the national pastime has led Gabbard to visit more than half of the Major League Baseball ballparks. He is on a self-described “quest” to conquer them all.
