I’m Erin Hallissy, the public affairs representative and communications specialist at Shell Martinez. My grandfather worked at this refinery for its first 40 years, and I began working here in October 2010. Before that, I had a 25-year career as a newspaper reporter and editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, where I was based in central Contra Costa County, and at the Contra Costa Times, where I primarily worked in the Martinez News Bureau.
More recently, I worked for five years at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, where I was the editor of the quarterly alumni magazine and the editorial director in the Office of College Communications. I am now serving as Shell’s representative on the boards of the Martinez Chamber of Commerce and the Martinez Education Foundation.
I grew up in Concord, and have lived in Martinez for almost 30 years, in the same house that my grandparents bought in 1916. I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State University, and a master’s degree in liberal arts from Saint Mary’s.
I enjoy a wide range of activities, from train travel and cooking to sewing and crocheting. I am a longtime season ticketholder to the Oakland A’s (Section 122), and a subscriber to the San Francisco Symphony. I am a former member of a bocce team in Martinez, and look forward to joining a new team now I am again working in Martinez.
Through this blog and through work on our new and improved Shell Martinez website, I hope to keep the community of Martinez better informed about the refinery, the people who work here and the events we sponsor and take part in.
