With the 9th Annual Strides for Schools Fun Run only a week away, Shell’s own Brett Scull is off to the races.

“I grew up in a family where both parents were teachers and I constantly watched them spend their own money to provide the most fun and engaging lessons for their students,” said Scull. “When I joined the Strides for Schools Fun Run, I didn’t realize how unique of an opportunity we have in this community. Every penny raised from the event goes directly to teacher educational grants. These grants encourage outside the box thinking and ultimately develop future leaders in Deer Park in ways that otherwise would not have been possible.”

The Fun Run began as a thank you to the community for Shell Deer Park’s 80th anniversary and with the Deer Park Education Foundation at the helm has grown exponentially ever since. The event continues to see more partners and sponsors come on board with students and their families lining up to start the race. In 2012, approximately $8,000 was raised from sponsorships. Fast forward to 2018 and the industry and community business partners have averaged around $115,000 in donations per year.

“This is truly a hallmark community event,” continued Scull. “You have the Education Foundation and Deer Park ISD along with the students and their families, residents, business and industry all coming together to support student learning, because in the end, the whole community benefits.”

Registration is open for the Strides for Schools Fun Run scheduled for April 28 and every registration is matched dollar-to-dollar by Shell Deer Park. Scull encourages everyone to participate.

“From running the 5k to coming out and cheering on the runners, there’s something for everyone. Plus, as an avid runner, watching the smile on the faces of the kids when the starting gun goes off is priceless,” continued Scull.
