Shell has been a proud Team Penske sponsor for many years in both NASCAR and IndyCar, and is featured on the cars of Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford Fusion, and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, driver of the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet. This year, the two Memorial Day weekend races, the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600, happened to be timed a week before the launch of new Shell V-Power® NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline, and the two cars featured special paint schemes previewing the new product name.
The 99th running of the Indianapolis 500 was among the most exciting in the race’s history. Helio Castroneves, piloting the No. 3 Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Chevrolet, hung in contention throughout the day, lurking in the top-10 and within striking distance of the leading time throughout the afternoon. The end of the race came down to a battle of two other Team Penske racers – Juan Pablo Montoya and Will Power. A photo finish saw Juan Pablo Montoya take the win, giving Roger Penske his record 16th win in Indianapolis.
In the evening race in Charlotte, Joey Logano and the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil team started second in the Coke 600. Logano was able to take the lead early in the race, and led two different times for 17 laps over the race’s first 100 circuits. However, Logano fought car troubles throughout the night and slipped back to eighth just past the halfway point of the race. Ultimately, Logano and the team finished 13th in the race, and moved up one spot in the point standings to third for the season.
