We have over 350 technical advisors and Product Application Specialists, designing the right package of lubricants and lubrication-related services to help reduce the operating costs of thousands of customers, on a day-to-day basis.
Shell has the largest global sales team and the most direct customer relationships of any lubricants supplier. Our people work across industry categories and are leaders in established and emerging markets. This enables us to specialize in bespoke solutions, face-to-face.
We also have a global network of technology centers in the Netherlands, Germany, UK, USA, India with our Joint Venture partners in Japan; and recently we opened a new Technology Centre in China.
These centers of excellence allow our scientists to work together on global and local technology programs, providing us with greater opportunities to work more closely with our customers and partners in each region.
Our field experts
Meet Scott Linholm: Global Product Application Specialist, US
Scott spent 21 years in the industry, learning nearly all there is to know about the fluids you pour into your car – fuels, lubricants, coolants – even windscreen wiper fluids. His work was divided 50:50 between the laboratory and the field. In Scott’s case, the field was Detroit: the cradle of the US motor industry.
Scott works as a Product Application Specialist in automotive lubricants for cars, concentrating on the initial fill business for Original Equipment Manufacturers and Genuine Parts Oils. Scott brings his immense experience to his work with customers, identifying their technical needs and finding a solution.
“Getting the approvals for the initial fill business at Chrysler and General Motors was easily the highlight of my career,” says Scott. “We went from no business and no approvals to all the first fill engine oil business for both companies and the GPO for Chrysler. It was hard work and a demanding process but it really paid off.”
Meet Darren Barwick: Technical Mining Team Leader, Australia
Prior to joining Shell over 10 years ago, Darren spent several years working for a large remote mining company in Australia in the engineering maintenance and asset management areas. Darren joined Shell as a Fuels and Lubricants engineer servicing Shell’s key customers across Australia and New Zealand.
In Darren’s role, he is able to combine his background in engineering and mining with his lubricants knowledge to provide technical support for mining customers, maintain OEM technical relationships, perform competence development and assessment of Shell’s Front Line Technical staff, and perform field trials and R&D activities.

Meet Olav Hoeger: Project leader, grease development
Olav has worked in both Fuels and Lubes laboratories, spending time in Shell Germany’s blending facility and in its analytical department. And in the 1990’s, Olav enjoyed 3 years of managing young apprentices before taking over Shell Germany’s Grease Laboratory.
Now, as current leader of Grease Development, Olav works on the development of greases for specific applications from the aviation sector to computer hard disc drives.
“I hugely enjoyed the teaching element of my role as the manager of apprentices when I was able to share the experiences of my own journey from apprentice to Project Leader. Today, my passion is interaction with customers; really understanding what they need and then solving the puzzle of finding the right solution.”
