Nicky Hayden was born in rural Owensboro, Kentucky (USA), on 30 July 1981, and was just 4 years old when he first began racing dirt track regularly. He became a professional rider at sixteen and in 1998 he completed his first full racing season, finishing fourth overall with HyperCycle Suzuki in both the AMA 750 Supersport and 600 Supersport categories.

In 1999, at 18, he signed for Erion Honda and became the youngest ever AMA 600 Supersport Champion. With Honda’s factory team in 2000 he progressed to the AMA Superbike category and finished second overall. A year later he finished third, and in 2002, in addition to winning the prestigious Daytona 200 race, he became the youngest AMA Superbike Champion, at 21 years and two weeks old.

2003 was Hayden’s debut year in MotoGP. He joined the factory Honda team, achieving 2 podium finishes and concluding the season in fifth position as Rookie of the Year. After a difficult 2004 season during which he fractured his collarbone during a Supermoto outing, in 2005 he achieved his first ever MotoGP win and a further 5 more podiums saw him close the season in third position.

The 2006 campaign brought Nicky true glory as he became MotoGP World Champion. In 2007 the GP category moved from 990cc machines to an 800cc platform and Hayden was never able to truly fight to defend his title as he was not comfortable on the new bike. 2008 was another year of mixed fortunes for him and he finished the year in sixth position.

For the 2009 season, Hayden switched to Ducati, racing alongside Casey Stoner.

While familiarizing himself with his new bike and team, the American turned in a podium finish at his home race in Indianapolis and ended the season positively.

In 2010 he finished seventh and in 2011, eighth.

For 2012, MotoGP returned to a 1000cc format.

A couple of scary accidents affected a season where, for the first time since he joined MotoGP, Hayden didn’t end up on the podium at any race.

In 2013 he will work together with his new teammate, Italian Andrea Dovizioso, to bring the team top results.

Andrea Dovizioso was born in Forlimpopoli, Italy, on 23 March 1986. By the time he was seven, he was racing minibikes on both asphalt and dirt, winning the 1997 and 1998 Italian mini road racing titles.

The 2000 season saw Andrea move up to a 125cc machine in the Aprilia Challenge, and he immediately earned the class crown. The following year, Dovizioso won the European 125cc championship.

In 2002, he moved into Grand Prix racing fulltime, racing a Honda for the Cirano Mularoni-led Scot team. He continued with them in 2003, achieving his first Grand Prix podium finish and pole position that season. Dovizioso’s progress continued in 2004, when he became the 125cc World Champion.

For the 2005 season he moved up to the 250cc class and finished the season in third position. Dovizioso’s ascent continued in 2006, as he won his first 250cc race and achieving a total of eleven podium finishes and two pole positions during the year, ending in a solid second place overall. He matched that same result in 2007.

2008 saw him take the big step up to MotoGP and closed his rookie year in fifth place in the standings. For 2009 he was promoted to the factory team and that same year he won his first MotoGP race at the British Grand Prix, finishing the season sixth in the overall standings. The 2010 season saw him improve that ranking by one, as well as earning his first-ever MotoGP pole position in Japan.

In 2011 Dovizioso achieved his best result in the premier class, finishing third overall. After ten years aboard Honda motorbikes, Dovizioso moved to the Tech3 Yamaha squad last year, when the MotoGP class switched from an 800cc displacement limit to 1,000cc. He ended up fourth in the final standings, the best result by a non-factory rider.

For 2013, Dovizioso takes an important step in his career, moving back to factory level with the Ducati Team, where he joins 2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden for the first time, aboard the Desmosedici GP13.
