1. What is engine gunk, and what is the effect of it on engine performance?

Gunk is the build-up of carbon deposits on intake valves and fuel injectors as a result of various chemical and physical processes that occur in the engine during its operation. Deposits in the inlet system create uneven surfaces, which can prevent air and fuel from combining in the right proportions and in the right conditions, detracting from engine performance.

The deposits that build up on the intake valves can act like a sponge, absorbing fuel, which is required during combustion, so that a weaker mixture of air and gasoline enters the combustion chamber. Such a weak mixture can cause a loss of power, which in turn can lead to rough running, reduced responsiveness and acceleration.

Industry and literature data indicate engine gunk can cause engine performance problems and that a cleaner engine perform can perform as originally designed, making it more fuel efficient with lower emissions.

2. How does Shell V-Power® Premium Gasoline deliver performance that excites?

An exciting drive is only possible when your vehicle performs at its best. Shell V-Power actively cleans for better performance by removing an average of 60% of harmful intake valve deposits left behind by low quality premium gasoline starting with your very first tank. Shell V-Power is the only premium that Ferrari recommends for its road cars.

3. How is Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline developed and tested?

Shell V-Power goes through rigorous testing both in the lab and at the track, before it ever makes its way to the market. It has been tested for more than half a million miles in bench engines, innovative testing technology of dual fuel engines, and in a range of popular vehicles found on the road today including: conventional, modern turbo-charged, direct fuel-injected, hybrids, and foreign and domestic models.

For over 60 years, our technical partnership with Ferrari hasprovided Shell with an environment to test new fuels in extreme conditions, and transfer those learnings from the track to the Shell V-Power road fuel developed for customers around the world.

When the very first Ferrari drove out of the factory gates at Maranello, Italy, it was powered and protected by Shell fuel, lubricants and motor oils. To this day, every Ferrari that leaves the plant contains Shell V-Power. Shell V-Power race fuel–which was used by Ferrari in the 2012 Formula One World Championship–contains 99% of the same components as found in Shell V-Power road fuel.

4. Since the Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines clean up engine gunk in all three grades, what makes Shell V-Power different?

Shell V-Power is our most technically advanced gasoline. It contains our highest octane gasoline as well as the highest concentration of our patented Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System. With five times the cleaning agents required by federal standards, Shell V-Power cleans up performance-robbing gunk even faster than Shell Regular grade gasoline in both conventional and modern, direct injection engines.

5. Why should I spend more to purchase Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline? How is it different than other premium gasolines?

If your owner’s manual recommends a high octane fuel, you should purchase Shell V-Power. Not all premium fuels are the same. Just like using lower quality regular gasoline can lead to gunky build-up, using lower quality premium gasolines can have the same impact. Shell V-Power actively cleans for better performance by removing an average of 60% of harmful intake valve deposits left behind by low quality premium gasoline starting with your very first tank. No other premium is Ferrari’s choice for it’s road cars.

6. What is the octane rating of Shell V-Power?

The octane level of Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline ranges anywhere from 91 to 93 octane, depending upon your market. The octane rating tells you the fuel’s resistance to knock under high temperature and pressure condition - or how well it will resist knocking. It's important to point out however that octane is not the only factor to consider when choosing a gasoline.

7. Can Shell V-Power be used in old cars or will only modern vehicles benefit from using them?

Both old and modern premium recommended or required vehicles that can benefit from a higher octane can also benefit from Shell V-Power. Shell V-Power is designed to actively clean for better performance, so you can get a more exciting drive no matter how old the vehicle is. Shell V-Power removes an average of 60% of performance robbing intake value deposits left behind by low quality premium gasoline starting with your very first tank.

8. What is the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standard? Is Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline certified?

Some of the world’s top automakers – Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen – believe that fuel quality in the U.S. is declining and agree that deposits on intake valve and fuel injectors can keep engines from achieving optimal performance. To try to raise the bar on fuel quality, these auto manufacturers designated a voluntary standard for gasoline detergency known as the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standard.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standard is beyond the government standards for detergency in gasolines. All grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, including Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline, are certified as meeting the TOP TIER Gasoline Detergent Standard.

9. I see all brands collecting fuels from the terminal — so aren’t all fuels the same?

There are actually two key components to a gasoline - the base fuel and the additive system. Base fuel quality is generally the same in an individual terminal. However, Shell blends a unique and patented additive package into all three grades of Shell gasoline before it is dispensed from the terminal. The Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System contains a patented formula, exclusive to Shell that cleans and protects intake valves and fuel injectors from gunk. Shell V-Power contains the highest concentration of this Shell Nitrogen Enriched Cleaning System.

10. Can I fill up with Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline only once a month, and use other grades to save?

Customers should not trade down to a low quality gasoline to save a couple cents now, when they could be hurting their engine and reducing its performance in the longer term. Gunk can form on intake values and fuel injectors in as little as 5,000 miles, and our tests prove that consistent using Shell V-Power Premium Gasoline actively protects against the build-up of harmful, performance-robbing deposits.  Use one of our Ways to Save to save at the pump and still get the best for less.
