Smarter Driving Tour
Shell teamed-up with John and Helen Taylor, known as the world’s most fuel efficient couple, during their latest record-setting attempt to help kick-off the Shell Smarter Driving program.
Shell believes that Smarter Driving can go a long way to help consumers stretch their budget while helping protect their vehicle. In April 2012, we teamed-up with Helen and John Taylor, world renowned fuel economy experts, for their latest record attempt across the U.S. to demonstrate how motorists can stretch their fuel while on the road.
During their 21-day fuel-efficiency trip throughout the 48 contiguous U.S. states, the Taylors achieved an average of 69.985 U.S. miles per gallon in an unmodified hybrid gasoline vehicle using tips from the Shell Smarter Driving Program. The program aims to demonstrate how everyday motorists can use practical tips to use fuels more efficiently and help stretch their fuel purchases further to become smarter drivers.
In August 2011, the Taylors completed their 23-day, 48 contiguous U.S. state tour and achieved an astounding average of 64.42 miles per gallon in an unmodified, non-hybrid gasoline vehicle by using tips from the Shell Smarter Driving program and using Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines exclusively along their route. The Taylors’ achievement was more than 50 percent greater than the Environmental Protection Agency’s estimated highway fuel economy for the vehicle they drove and surpassed the minimum requirement of 54.5 mpg announced by the government for passenger vehicles to achieve by 2025.
About the Taylors
The Taylors are passionate about fuel economy. They have two companies, Fuelacademy and Eco2driving where they run global education programs, to teach drivers how to reduce their fuel consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, save money and drive smarter and safer. Between them, Helen and John hold 90 world records of which 44 are for fuel economy.
The Taylors and Shell
- Shell has been teaming-up with Taylors to help push the boundaries of fuel efficiency and set records across the world for several years. For example, they drove around the world travelling through 25 countries, four continents and using only 24 tanks of Shell fuel covering 18,465 miles (or 29,717 kilometers) in 78 days.
- Shell has been encouraging consumers to use less fuel by changing their driving behaviors and inspiring future generations to design energy efficient cars for years. Most notably in the Shell Eco-marathon and the Shell FuelSave challenges.
