What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/consumption?
- EDUCATION
- The time is now and the American public is ready to take action. We do not want to be dependent on foreign oil. We need to understand how energy touches so many parts of our lives not just gasoline for our cars.
- Education is the answer and importation of oil is the problem. We need people in the field acting as consultants for individuals and businesses on how to reduce their dependency on energy.
- Education provides: 1) In the development of curriculum that will address why we need to conserve, 2) the development of "to do" conservation projects for grade school children, benchmarking what success should look like, 3) publication of conservation success stories and 4) working with Keep America Beautiful.
- Involve all segments in the educational process-especially developing education energy curriculum! Start with corporate initiatives to lead the way.
- Emphasizing the significance to life of conservation of energy. This is not clearly understood. Severity of potential supply issues not being communicated. There may be constraints on what anyone can do here in America, as the management of oil by other governments is likely to prevent a market solution. It is probably required that there be a larger role taken to address the energy demand issues by our federal government.
- At preschool level by using incentives to get youth involved in conservation projects-stimulating their minds and focus on conservation. What I have observed is that young people (teens and up) are not very conservation focused. It is important that as adults we set a good example. My father, for example, would turn up an oilcan to drain the last drop. Who among us is willing to lay down their car keys and take mass transit?
- We need to identify the options and implications. How does conservation fit in?
- Investing in mass transit and light rail to address energy conservation. A recent vote for light rail was defeated in Cincinnati because people didn't understand the benefits for energy conservations and even job creation.
- Corporate creativity, how to grow and remain profitable with government constraints (i.e. increased taxes)? What price do we pay for being dependent on oil (foreign oil)? However, I think to manage this dependency on foreign oil we need to diplomatic as we strive to increase our independence.
- Raise gasoline tax - Look at the price of gasoline in many countries that is much higher than here in the U.S. We should raise the price of gasoline at the pump and then take the remainder over the price to produce and sell and use it to develop solutions. We should utilized specific schools and researchers to look into the issues of energy conservations to come up with solutions and be prepared to pay them for this research. Set price of gasoline at a high enough price and plan to use excess to invest in conservation. How many of us are willing to take the bus or train.
- Change behaviors - It is penalizing people to talk about setting price high instead of finding more positive methods to influence their behavior.
- Convert cars from gasoline to diesel. Government should take a more active role in setting standards for energy conservation. We should use revisit CAFÉ standards and have government set higher standards and hold people, companies accountable.
- The growing belief in ethanol as an energy solution is driving other actions, which may be detrimental benefits. For example, I have read that farmers are plowing under valuable farmland and choosing to plan corn instead of other crops because of the economic advantage. We should stop to determine the true costs of these types of trade off; will there be implications in terms of higher CO2 emissions? We should consider for example imposing a carbon tax to help manage situations such as these.

What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- The U.S. Grows 9 million acres of corn for ethanol production, which only supplements fossil gasoline. Bio diesel from algae could use the same 9 million acres to completely power all the trucks, buses, trains, cars, and boats in the U.S. Ethanol is rated at 360-475 gallons per acre. Algae based bio diesel has experimentally yielded 15,000 gallons per acre.
- Algae can be grown on rooftops, deserts, or almost sunny spot.
- Corn uses up soil nutrients faster than the soil can regenerate. Algae do not destroy the soil. Corn uses more water from underground sources than rainwater can replenish. Algae (depending on the species) can be grown from sea or fresh water. Water can be filtered and reused.
- With waste heat sources, algae can be grown year round.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- When John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company says" but wind will ultimately be a variable contributor, because the wind doesn't blow consistently all the time" he is WRONG! True, the wind doesn't blow consistently all the time, but when it does blow, excess energy can be converted to the perfect fuel - hydrogen. It can be stored until the wind dies down and then used to generate electricity and/or power vehicles. All gasoline engines in this country could be converted to burn hydrogen WITHOUT fuel cells. Fuel cells will be even better when they become cost effective but they are not necessarily the only way to burn hydrogen in cars,
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Every kilowatt of power produced by a wind turbine reduces the amount of oil that we have to buy from the Middle East. That is good for national security, and for our economy.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Build refineries by first lobbying the government to change current laws in order to allow the construction of new refineries.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Mandate retailers to offer a high percentage low watt fluorescent light bulbs (& lower the % of available incandescent bulbs). Make more aggressive tax incentives for those who purchase hybrid OR certain high mileage diesel cars (not trucks...the idea being to actually reduce the consumption of the scarce world oil reserves).
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- US energy policy appears to by historically reactive once a problem is on the door step. Answer to this question...a very dismal vision based on current energy policies and past performance of US regulators.

That we find an alternative to gas to save the planet and the human race.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Look at new technology in solar and hydrogen developments
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
Wind and wave power solar and hydrogen and of course nuclear
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Forget all about using hydrocarbons forever while we still can, the big yellow/orange abject in the sky can feed us, keep us warm, drive us where ever we want, and generate all the electricity we can use, nothing is cleaner than electricity, the worse polluter is our natural gas, nothing is more deadlier.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Program to develop Shale oil deposits in the west.

All petroleum sources developed, coal to gas and liquid developed, nuclear, and research accelerated for replacement energy sources.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Somehow build Midwest refineries not just ethanol but crude oil facilities so they will be less interfered by natural disasters.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
People wont give up their SUV’s you cant do much, other companies have capped wells, uncap them and use other oil detection means like the Russians have.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
I'm not expecting cheap $.99 a gallon gas, but we're creating a new poor middle class. The top 40% richest can't sustain a country with their buying power. Good luck I’ll vote to relax EPA rules so you guys can do your jobs.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
What are you doing for coal liquefaction or gasification in the US?
I know you have a project with China.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
We should be making sure that everyone has oil around the world.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
What we should be doing is increasing the demand on energy.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
My vision is on energy portfolio is to help the energy and save it.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Urging congress to allow drilling in the continental shelf and it areas currently designated as off limits to exploration and drilling.
I would love for the shale oil deposits in the Rockies to be developed and exploited.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Nothing let the market work. That will regulate, manage and coordinate supply and demand!!!
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
We should be exploring in every area of the U.S. Oil companies should be held to high standards in regards to protection of the environment but they should not be kept from accessing the lands currently withheld from exploration.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
I do not know. Oil is getting more expensive to extract and will not be cost effective to search for new oil reserves in the coming future as these oil reserves are nearly impossible to extract and would cost more to extract than on what would be returned as revenue from the crude oil found there.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Trying to force an overall change to a nation is nearly impossible. We cannot simply throw a switch all of sudden and reduce energy needs. There are so many factors such as food, population, transportation, and industry.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
I know oil has a very high energy return compared to what it takes to extract it, but as Shell and other oil companies have stated, oil demand is going to outstrip supply eventually. So why not get into the hydrogen business for FUSION REACTORS. Yes that's right I said fusion reactors. I know it takes oil to do any kind of alternative energy (really it's oil derivatives), but fusion can provide many orders of magnitude of energy returned compared to energy used to make it happen. It's just hard to confine such a reaction, which is 100 Million degrees centigrade. Iter.org is trying to come up with a solution to this problem with fusion. I really think this should be researched aggressively for future prosperity energy needs!!
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Domestic oil supply has been in decline since 1971.
It is way past time for a major reduction in petroleum use by all Americans.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Steep fuel tax, balanced by reducing payroll tax.
Major increase in mandatory MPG ratings.
In short, be more like Europe!
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
Peak oil will effects will become apparent to the average American.
Adjustments easy and difficult will be forced upon us.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Why isn't Shell working to produce the South Texas Tar Sands? It is my understanding there is over 10 Billion barrels of oil in these sands. Shell is in Canada what is wrong with Texas? I travel through this area regularly and see next to nothing being done in this area. Conoco had visions of a refinery in this area by 1988 employing 2000 people. This press release was in one of the local papers as well as in one of the Houston papers. Why do we continue to send US dollars to countries that have no loyalties to the US?
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
I would tax imported oil excessively. Ration gas if need be to break our hold by foreign oil! Remove anyone from public office with ties to big oil and foreign holdings!!
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
Bleak!
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Finding new ways to refine the crude oil, locations similar to off shore drilling with refineries built into the rigs. Or perhaps a location where the newly obtained oil can be refined in international waters.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
In the coming years, the company making transactions easier and faster will get the business. The less time a person will spend pumping gas or stopping for a variety of items, the more time they have for life. This translates to more time to shop, more time to travel, and less time distracted by how long it takes to get that job done.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Open more areas 2 drill and build more REFINERYS!
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
SAD
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Shell should be placing the CAS # on their MSDS sheets so companies can comply with the mandate from Department of Homeland Security to check the list of chemicals of concern at their locations!! Or should we take our business to another company who already provides this information??
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
More Nuclear to concern the oil & gas we have on the planet
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Increase refining capacity? Reducing the number of EPA imposed formulations?
Use the most environmental friendly drilling approaches.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Have a real domestic energy policy with short-term and long-term aspects. We should be conserving but not shrinking our productivity and economy as a result of conservation. In other words, efficiency is more important.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
I think, in-the-beyond-the-decade we will need to be using nuclear power, superconductors in our power-grid, solar, tidal energy, natural gas, and hydrogen.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Educate the public about the true inpact of increased drilling offshore Fla., Cal. and in Alaska and the significance of the increased supply derived from this activity
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Manage (ration) energy? Why not limit consumption by regulating house size in the same manner that we regulate auto size i.e. we limit the amount of energy a house can consume regardless of size or number in the family and also impose max/min winter/summer temp. That way we could further cripple and handicap home construction in the same manner that we continually handicap our automotive industry relative to the foreign competition.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
Since we are taking the same approach to the current problem that we used to handle the 73 shortages, I would not expect the future to be drastically different. Of coarse, the price of eggs, bacon, milk and beef will be much higher as we inefficiently convert and distribute corn to fuel our then legislated mini vehicles. The alternative of increased drilling increased nuclear power or improved access to crude oil are not politically or environmentally acceptable.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
I continue to encounter shocking economic and technological ignorance regarding the oil industry on the part of private citizens and the media. Similarly with environmental regulations which, for little or no real gain in environmental improvement, suck up capital dollars which could be used for infrastructure/exploration. Hence, I see educational activity as the platform from which all other efforts must spring. The public and the media must continually be reminded that huge income and/or "profit" numbers must be viewed in light of return on investment for each segment of the business. Further, they need to be reminded that taxes are a major contributor to the cost they see for products, and that hence the industry has more incentive to keep prices down than does government (which "profits" handsomely from price increases and without taking any risk). If public and media understanding is thus increased, it might be possible politically to change the DOE mission to one of facilitating the exploitation of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources rather than impeding the same (i.e., controlling and restricting). I recognize these are longer-term activities. Perhaps an effective shorter term objective might be to reduce the "friction" caused by close interface between refining and the public in "hostile" environments (e.g., Martinez and L.A. Basin) by moving refining activity to more remote areas (e.g., Reno, Nevada area and/or southern Nevada desert) --- thus recognizing the real possibility that such activities in urban areas may well be forced to shut down sometime in the future).
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
We certainly shouldn't be subsidizing farmers to grow corn (or anything else) for ethanol manufacture! The best control for demand/consumption is energy priced at its real cost. Aggressive mileage standards also help by providing an even playing field for transportation manufacturers. Finally, reducing federal government support for certain types of transportation (e.g., aviation --- for example, put the cost of the FAA into the ticket price) at the expense of others (e.g., rail) would improve the cost competitiveness of more efficient (on an energy per pound transported basis) modes of transportation.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
Continued heavy dependence on conventional and unconventional oil and gas, with increasing amount of tar sands and shale oil production coming on line. Perhaps an increase in the conversion of coal to liquid and gas fuels (if low environmental impact technology available and economic). Significant increase share for nuclear. Increased production of ethanol and of alternatives such as wind and solar --- but all with government subsidies which hide the true costs.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
The technologies we have today should all be supported by Shell to the extent they are economic and viable. That includes nuclear energy incl. support of fusion energy. These and hydro power appear to be the lowest cost sources of significance.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
As a nation we cannot force people nor "legislate technology"
We must encourage and educate. Our internal resources of whatever kind should be developed and used, but subsidies minimized. We must use sound basis for whatever we do. The future will require us to become truly world competitive and energy is a most important economic factor.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade and beyond?
One where we use in their proper place all sources. My pool in Florida used solar panels and worked very well. Economic growth needs a full 24/7 reliable energy supply. Solar, wind will not do this. Hydro/geo will.
Nuclear fission is safe and not expensive now. France has used it since WWII with no real problem. We need to continue to support the fusion experiment in France. But most of all, we need to get moving!!
Replace as much electrical energy with nuclear as possible and use fossil fuels for transportation/heating, etc. I've run the balance and it looks pretty good.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Exactly what it’s doing.

What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Enforce mandatory rooftop gardens. Make solar power panels mandatory on all new home constructions. Make wind/solar power also mandatory for corporate buildings and skyscrapers. Make a vehicle age limit like Singapore. Get the older more non-efficient vehicles off the streets. Enforce a US wide recycling program for all residences, and make all incinerators burning refuse an energy source. Make solar power cheaper. The list can go on and on.
Alternative fuel sources like ethanol, solar, wind, etc. Green and organic. The two will work together.

Alternative fuel sources like ethanol, solar, wind, etc. Green and organic. The two will work together.
The more diverse the better and with Oil Shale technology as possible as it is now will keep us off the tit of unstable countries and regions around the world.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
If Shell (and other companies) worked together as you do with the LOOP project in Louisiana, you could add 2 cents per gallon and provide cash rebates to people that buy the most fuel-efficient cars. This would help the market drive efficiency. The net affect could reduce fuel costs in fact resulting in getting that 2 cents back.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
I don't believe man is responsible for climate change, but what concerns me is energy as a resource. Eventually cheap energy (oil) will be gone and we will need a replacement that will have to come from domestic sources. We should invest in more renewables to the point in which its cheaper to heat your house with a ceramic heater rather than heating oil, because once the oil goes away, the energy will have to come from somewhere. We will need the infrastructure to deliver than energy, and currently the national grid doesn't have that much extra capacity.
Alternative fuel sources like ethanol, solar, wind, etc. Green and organic. The two will work together.
Most people talk about hydrogen, which has potential, but a gallon of gas has more hydrogen than a gallon of liquid H2. Someone needs to invent a manufactured gasoline that can be used as an energy storage medium. This will require massive amounts of electricity though, and that’s why we need to expand our electricity production now through coal, wind solar and wave energy.

- To be a respectful delegate of the oil energy sector.
- Need to educate the public with energy awareness and openness. To be an environmental and heath steward. And with this it will help open up new fields currently off limits. Hopefully!
- STOP EXPORTING GAS & OIL. THOSE ARE OUR PRECIOUS RESERVERS & WE NEED TO HANG ON TO THEM. FORGET BEING A GOOD NEIGHBOR. TELL EVERYONE OUTSIDE THE US TO DEAL WITH IRAN.
- REWORK SOME OF THOSE OLD FIELDS YOU GAVE UP YEARS AGO. CURRENT TECHNOLOGY SAYS WE CAN DO MORE IF WE WORK HARDER.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Conserve energy. The fact that that the US consumes 30 % more energy per $ GDP than EU or Japan says something. Conservation means better quality of life for less. It will take a shift in people’s minds and technology. Even simple thinking and application of existing approaches can already go a long way (e.g. turning on the power saving options on computers).
- Mass transit systems should be enhanced and promoted possibly with subsidies. Large companies could offer private bus services to employees that commute from common residential areas
- WORK WITH THE AUTO MFGS TO OBTAIN BETTER GAS MILEAGE PER GALLON W/O BUYING A HYBRID. MAKE DIESELS STOP IDELING WHEN NOT ON THE ROAD.
- STOP BUYING CORN FOR ETHANOL FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES. GROW IT HERE, WE NEED THE WORK.
- UNCAP ALL OF THOSE GAS WELLS IN WEST TEXAS. STOP CAPPING WELLS TO BEGIN WITH. DRILL IN CALIFORNIA THEY USE MORE, SO WE NEED TO DRILL THERE. USE WIND MORE. STOP LISTENING TO THE STOCK MARKET GUESS ABOUT OIL PRICES BASED ON WHAT MAY HAPPEN, NOT WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Mixed bag of various energy sources, much greater fraction in local sources (solar electricity and water heating from roof tops, heat pumps, passive cooling).

- IT WILL NOT CHANGE ALL THAT MUCH. THERE WILL BE MORE OF US SO USAGE WILL BE UP.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Extensive search of your website reveals not one mention of mass transit, bicycling, and restructuring cities to reduce built-in automobile dependency. Without such measures all supply-side and technology-based solutions will fail. Your solutions thus smack of simple self-interest.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Oil and other energy supplies will become more expensive, resulting in a naked battle between those who want energy for food (necessity) and those who want it for personal transportation (luxury). War is not unlikely. After all, we're fighting in Iraq so that Americans can drive to Wal-Mart, right? Thus my comment above.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Don't increase supply!

- Invest more in solar energy -; it is under estimated
- Better communication -; let people know the challenges
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
Add refining capacity
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
Support research into energy alternatives or advocate higher CAFE Standards. Sure it's car manufactures territory, but energy cos. have enough involvement in energy policy if not more so than the car companies.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
I see that the market will bid up the price of a barrel of oil until their is a change in either consumption or supply. I hope that consumption will decrease, unlikely, or greater efficiencies can be found in the deliverable supply. I hope Shell and the rest of the hydrocarbon competitors realize that Americans and most of the world understands that capitalism is the only working model, but that the environment can wreak havoc on the market if care is not taken to mitigate a potential global economic and environmental catastrophe. People are shareholders. If you kill shareholders you kill the market place.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Nothing. Protect the environment. When the choice is securing our oil or conserving air, choose air.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Provide sticks and carrots to nudge industries and consumers toward healthier energy choices.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Switch to alternative, renewable sources of energy. Specifically, go to electric cars, and have filling stations that supply recharged batteries for when the electric battery runs down.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Obviously something other than what you are doing because you are costing us a fortune and we are not as dumb as you think we are--YOU'RE KILLING US!!!!
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- We have been doing fine; if you think that driving the prices up to an unmanageable level is how to conserve energy, then cut off the food supply to stop overweight Americans from becoming so obese.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- You continue to make record profits in the BILLIONS of dollars and think that we are stupid enough to accept your logic and rationale that it is for future research and development-Ponderous-IT'S PROFIT!!! STOP IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- I propose Shell take firm responsibility in leading this nation to a cleaner source of energy. What could be more important than converting power plants, big industry, and transportation use into a more friendly fuel? Domestically speaking, I feel like our country is more than capable of being self sufficient and I believe that in these critical fragile times, it is necessary to develop or begin using cleaner available technology.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Energy demand will always rise as the population increases. That being said, it is critical that the US begin to take action and put pressure on big business to convert their factories and plants into "Greener" ones. This being said, Shell has an opportunity here to provide that Green source. It is primarily up to you to bring this Green fuel to the forefront and make it available for consumer use.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- I don’t see much change. I hear a lot of talk because that’s what people are talking about but I personally think there is little interest to do anything about it at this point in time. If I had it my way, I envision factories converting to Biofuel, Automobiles powered by electricity and communities running on solar power.
- The only way change will happen is if companies like Shell make Green fuel available.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Promoting energy efficiency! Lobbying to expanding the transportation sector fuel efficiency standards to all forms of transportation. Providing grants for communities seeking to incorporate mass transit. If you decrease demand, your product will be available longer, especially for all of those other uses of petroleum products.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Raising fuel prices to encourage users to think about their consumption. Inexpensive products do not demand consumers to minimize their use!
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Smaller, site specific energy production will be necessary. In the southwest, solar panels on homes and businesses; on the plains, wind turbines; coasts can exploit tidal changes. Even with the 70 years your website sites as supply of petroleum, where will the world be if we don't find alternatives? Will these suddenly emerge in 60 years, ready to meet the challenges? Although coal-based electricity produces more emissions than oil and natural gas combustion, the technology to capture and minimize these emissions exists and is even practical at the power station; electric vehicles have the potential to move our primary fuel use from cars to the power plant where emission are better controlled.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- The short answer is "Nothing"! Added oil consumption will simply increase global warming and make this planet uninhabitable.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- We must move our economy toward a hydrogen/nuclear base as quickly as possible.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Shell and its competitors need to abandon oil in favor of massive investment in renewable resources. Ethanol and natural gas are not good choices. Hydrogen powered transportation and nuclear electric plants are what are required. Go to www.nationalvapor.com to see what's available as a first step.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Pump, pump, and pump that stuff out. NOW!!! And get the pump prices down. NOW!!!
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Just give us lower pump prices and we can handle things just fine.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Get the oil out of the ground in mass quantities and get the pump prices down. Waaaay down. NOW!!!
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Keep pushing for ANWR access. No matter what people say, it will be used as a source in the future. All of the people against this today will be pushing to drill ANWR when they can't fill their tanks someday. ANWR is a speck on the map of Alaska.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- We must continue research into more fuel-efficient vehicles and alternative fuel sources. Tax incentives should be given for those with high-mileage vehicles. Brazil can be used as a model, in that they produce large amounts of ethanol from sugarcane. Although we cannot afford to use our corn supply for ethanol production, we can use inedible crop materials for production. Crops grown for ethanol could also be grown indoors in greenhouses. Buy diesel vehicles. Diesel vehicles need a new face to present to the consumer. They are no longer dirty and smelly, but extremely fuel efficient. They also last forever.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Gain more access for drilling and production
- Better education on energy
- Develop unconventionals
- More biofuel development and sales
- Use efficient technology to recover more barrels
- More conservation to offset hydrocarbon use
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Better education on energy - young and old
- More conservation
- Shell needs to disseminate information, teach government employees
- Change the US behavior - more carpooling and cycling

- No single solution, but want to use less fossil fuels
- More clean coal
- More nuclear technology
- More biofuels from algae
- Better education of public
- Better technology collaboration on alternatives
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Find economical ways to synthesize the required compounds.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Managing consumption is an unpopular process ~ However!! In my experience private employer companies do all they can to AVOID letting employees telecommute. As a nation, we need to identify Telecommuting as a progressive ideal, and directly address the problem of "Employer Sovereignty".
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- I see Chaos in the short-term as demand is re-tooled to fit the future (electric) energy supply
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Give the Ogoni land back to the people and negotiate for use of its oil. Shell would not face opposition if it dealt fairly with people whose land has been stolen.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- America should invest seriously in mass transit systems. Current investments are ridiculous because they can't achieve a capacity that really makes a difference.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Oil and coal will decrease significantly. The US will very slowly substitute energy systems away from oil.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Increase domestic (US) production and build more distillation refineries, despite the environmentalist resistance
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- Encourage energy use reduction at ALL levels. Not through laws, but through advertising and community efforts.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Use wind where it is available, use geothermal where it is available, use solar where it makes economic sense, use nuclear for all new point-source energy production and use oil from whatever sources make economic sense.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Get more E85 ethanol pumps online.

- Raise the price past $4.00 a gal so people are encouraged to get rid of their gas guzzling SUV's and buy more fuel efficient vehicles or hybrids.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- Other than oil we need to look seriously at plug in hybrids, ethanol, and sometime out in the future hydrogen. Biodiesel may also be part of the means to get past the oil shortage till hydrogen comes on line.
What should Shell be doing to increase domestic oil supply?
- Work with car makers and congress to establish higher standards in fuel efficient cars, and increase availability and aesthetic appeal in mass transportation (since we Americans are shallow in that sense). The less we use, the more we have for a longer period of time. Public education in the peak oil theory won't cause us to panic; it will cause us to demand more attention to it's solutions, quicker - sort of like the Y2K "scare." Sure, people were nervous, and many did some rash stockpiling, but it became such a big deal, that the nation paid attention, and many people came up with solutions - and the worse case scenario never happened.
What should we be doing as nation to manage energy demand/ consumption?
- More people should be highly encouraged to do things, like install fluorescent bulbs. Grass root campaigns and groups do a decent job in their local sectors for this, but if it were a nationally, commercially sponsored program, think of the many hundreds of thousands who would be hearing it for the first time? Work with cities to build greener schools, (a HUGE amount of energy goes into just one school building) hospitals, and other city buildings. Fuel efficient cars should be made more appealing, not just 'responsible and ethical" - since many Americans leave that to the 'nerdy' sect. Much higher energy efficient standards should be put in place for all new construction, tax credits given for greener living, and solar products, such as hot water heaters should be marketed better.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- I am an incurable optimist, but this is one area that depresses me if I think about it too much. Until the public is better educated on the effects of life without oil, (because we can't produce it fast enough, or it becomes so pricey it is a luxury for the wealthy), there isn't going to be a large enough demand for alternative energy sources to make it a highly profitable venture. Since our society is based on making money, I truly believe that major advances won't be made until the public sees it as immediately financially beneficial. ADVERTISE the need MUCH more often. Tell people they NEED what you are doing in terms of alternative energy, (A simple series of frequently broadcast TV commercials and primetime specials would be all it takes) and you will undoubtedly have the financial support it takes to make advancements. Don't underestimate the American public. Although accustomed to a rather glutinous life globally speaking, we are intelligent, reasonable, and supportive generally speaking.
It floors me every year that I teach about resources in science (3rd grade) and the students say things like "why isn't someone fixing it?" when we learn about how much non-renewable resources we use in our day to day living. And it breaks my heart to look at them and say in my happiest, most encouraging way, "We are the "they." It won't change unless "we" make it happen." That is a necessary, but highly burdensome revelation to an 8-9 yr. old. They have the best ideas though! (Like green schools that operate on solar energy, and skylights for sun instead of all those overhead lighting fixtures, etc. If things continue as they are now, my vision is dark, but if you rally the troops, I see a snowballing demand for cleaner, greener, localized energy. I personally know many affluent people who would be more than happy to invest in alternative energy production if it were financially beneficial to them.
What is your vision of the US energy portfolio in the coming decade?
- It takes a crisis...people will not change their buying/spending habits by being swayed by "evidence" or intellectual discussions.
Petroleum wake-up calls:
- 1973-74 Yom Kippur war
- 1978-79 Iranian Revolution
- 1990 first Gulf War
- 2003-04 2nd Gulf War
What did we learn about petroleum and vulnerability?
Nothing - time frame was too short. Other crises to learn from:
- Water - Atlanta, Phoenix, Texas 1996-2006 and American Southwest in general.
- Food - diversion to biodiesel and ethanol:
- Mexico tortilla shortage
- Italy pasta shortage (2006-07)
- November 16, 2005 the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations held a hearing on Peak Oil and the coming American energy crisis. Conclusions:
- Senators agreed that any major change will require a crisis, and that crisis is coming.
- It is not popular for a politician to speak of a future that is not better than the past or present.
- …and no one uses the "R" word (rationing)
- Understand your audience...the American public
History teaches:
- Short term crisis does not promote long term thinking about the problem
- American Public has a "They will fix it" mind set.
- Americans do not want to be inconvenienced, have to wait, or use the word "scarcity or shortage" in their vocabulary. Nor do they want anyone to put it there.
- Don't make the global warming mistake
- Define and enhance the concept of "Peak Oil" BP appears to be the only major company to do this - and even so, the transformation is subtle..."Beyond Petroleum."
- Don't let this concept become a polarizing element of either political party as has happened with the issue of global climate change. Kiss of death.
- Educate the public about their role of energy in their lives
- Where does it come from and who controls it.
- Emphasize the role of corporations and government.
- Focus on a narrow side of energy production and distribution, especially the concept of competition (clueless) - there are 3 billion new petroleum competitors on the planet (China and India.)
- Misconception of too much profit?
Educate via comparisons:
- Petroleum is about 3%
- Jewelry 300%
- Pharmaceuticals 30%
- Banks 18%
- Computers 15%
- Household products 12%
- Bottled water 1800%
- Develop a perspective for the future.
- Do we owe anything to our children or do we gobble it up and let them fight over the scraps?
- Where is the petroleum in our lives?
- President "we are addicted" - not the right image, negative connotations.
- Better: Petroleum is like the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone - we have loved them to death.
- Engage at all levels.
- Someone has to be convincing with the answer to answer the question: "Why can't we just keep on keeping on?"
- The American public has to understand their "Once upon a time…" lifestyle can't continue, can't be sustained.
- The petroleum outcome is certain - only the tactics are debatable (I don't think there is the luxury of time for strategy.)
- Approach to solution needs to include:
- Generate good science to support model of peak oil
- Economically feasible to execute or have economic benefits
- Political will power to execute plan
- Delivered to public in a reasoned non-political methodology
