Education Initiatives

The Partners in Education (PIE) Program is an opportunity for businesses and schools to work together to improve the overall quality of education in a community.  Business representatives can help a school review its needs and assist in the planning and development of special projects using the business employees as resources.

St. Charles Parish Schools and Shell Chemical were honored with the 2004 National Civic Star Award for its wide-ranging partnership. The award, initiated by the American Association of School Administrators and Sodexho School Services, recognizes school districts and organizations that have teamed with local communities to develop and implement innovative activities that advance student learning.Norco initiated its first Partnership for Education Project with St. Charles Schools some 15 years ago. Since that time, the school system, community and Shell have worked together to provide educational opportunities and economic inclusion for residents through a variety of outreach activities.

Efforts have focused on youth development, adult/parent education, workforce preparation and community involvement and enrichment.Shell Norco’s Partners on Education program includes formal association with Norco Elementary School K-3, Norco Elementary School 4-6, and Mimosa Park Elementary, as well as association with other area schools and training centers.

In 2003, Norco employees contributed more than a thousand hours of volunteer time toward educational outreach programs serving as science fair judges, career day speakers, mentors and guest speakers. Additionally, Norco employees are active in such projects as reading to elementary students in their classrooms, teaching a Junior Achievement course or demonstrating a science experiment, communicating with third grade Pen Pals.Several Norco employees teach a Process Technology course for Destrehan and Hahnville High School students, providing an introduction to the foundation for a career as a petrochemical industry employee.

In 2004, Shell Norco sponsored its third River Parishes Youth Leadership Camp on the Nicholls State University campus for middle school students from St. Charles Parish and St. John Parish. The three-day interactive camp empowers youngsters with guidelines, suggestions and confidence to improve the quality of their lives and assist them in becoming productive citizens in their school and community.
