Economic Development
In 2003 Shell Chemical LP and Motiva Enterprises (a Shell affiliate) established a million endowment with the Greater New Orleans Foundation for the development of the Norco Community Economic Development Foundation.
The objective was to establish an organization that supports the future and economic development of Norco. Managed by an independent project manager, priorities were identified by an advisory committee made up of Norco residents.
Whitener Snacks, Inc., a Norco-based business, was the first recipient of the precedent-setting investment in the Norco community. The renewable grant, awarded in increments of 50,000, not only assists the growing business to remain in Norco but also paved the way for relocation to the former River Parishes Hardware site on Apple Street which had been vacated for several years. The Norco Community Economic Development Foundation, managed by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, is community-driven, with local citizens shaping its priorities and work.
Vision: Members of the Norco community have access to education and training and to sustainable employment that will enhance their lives and provide for their personal and family needs.
Mission: Address social and economic issues at the local level in a manner that increases the capacity of the community. The foundation provides leadership and vision in identifying community needs and creating sustainable solutions.
Priorities:
- Priority One - Small Business Retention/New Jobs
- Priority Two - Career Development/Training
- Priority Three-Quality of Life Health/Land/Infrastructure/Senior Citizens
- Priority Four - Youth Opportunity Fund
- Priority Five - River Parishes, Regional, and State Partnerships
