Back-To-Back Top-Five Finishes In Texas

13/04/2009

Quaker State Driver Remains Second in the World of Outlaws Point Standings

Kinser at Texas

Steve Kinser, 20-time World of Outlaws (WoO) champion, continues his pursuit of number 21 with a solid weekend in Texas behind the wheel of his Quaker State Maxim. After a pair of top-five finishes in a Texas double-header, Kinser sits second in the standings, just 24 points out of the top spot after 10 races.

The race on Friday night was the first for the WoO at Lone Star Speedway, Kilgore, TX since 2004 and a huge crowd welcomed the series back to the blazing fast half-mile track to watch Kinser wage a great battle with race winner Joey Saldana and defending WoO champion and current points leader Donny Schatz to finish third.

The "King" of the Outlaws qualified 11th and went on to win his heat race.  His fifth place finish in the Crane Cams Dash put him on the inside of row three for the start of the 30-lap A-Main. In a race slowed eight times by caution, Kinser was able to run with the leaders but had to settle for the final podium position at the checkered flag for his ninth top-10 finish of the season.

"We were a little off in the feature," stated Kinser. "We'll go back at it tomorrow night. We were pretty consistent, but we still need to be a little bit quicker. We made some changes tonight and it didn't really seem to fit what I wanted to do. We'll just plugging away, that's all we can do."

Saturday night the touring winged sprint car warriors took on the high-banked 1/4-mile Houston Raceway Park, Baytown, TX.  Kinser qualified the Quaker State car 10th and went on to finish second in his heat race.  A second place finish in the Crane Cam Dash put him on the outside of the front row for the feature.

Battling the usual suspects for the lead throughout the entire 40-lap race, Kinser had to settle for fifth in the final finishing order behind Saldana, who picked up his second consecutive win, Schatz, Craig Dollansky and Danny Lasoski.

Kinser has 10 top-10 finishes in the first 11 races of the 80-plus 2009 WoO season. The World of Outlaws return to action on Friday, April 17 at Paducah International Raceway in Kentucky followed by a stop at 1-55 Raceway in Missouri on Saturday, April 18.
