Gordon Finishes 2nd In New Hampshire

28/06/2009

Jimmie Johnson also Scores a Top-10 Finish at Loudon

Hendricks on the Track

Hendrick Motorsports' Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson both had dominating performances in Sunday's rain-shortened LENOX Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Both led multiple laps but in the end pit strategy played a role as the rain approached and they had to settle for second and ninth respectively. Fellow HMS teammates Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Mark Martin finished 13th and 14th after running in the top-10 for the majority of the race.

After Friday's qualifying session was cancelled because of rain, Gordon and Johnson both started from the front where they remained throughout most of the race. Gordon took the lead early and remained on the point for a total of 64 laps. Johnson also took his turn leading twice for a race-high 93 laps. Both finished in the top-10 maintaining their second and third positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings.

Both Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Mark Martin had solid runs running in the top-10 for the majority of the day. Earnhardt's 13th-place finish gained him one position in points where he now sits 19th with Mark Martin maintaining his 11th-place points position after finishing 14th. Martin also led one lap earning five bonus points for the day.

Joey Logano took the win scoring his first Sprint Cup Series victory. Following Gordon's second-place finish was Kurt Busch in third with David Reutimann and Tony Stewart rounding out the top-five.

Next up for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is the running of the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Live television coverage begins on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on TNT.  The event will also be broadcast live on MRN (Motor Racing Network) and Sirius Satellite Radio with coverage beginning at 7:15 p.m. (ET).
