Shell Businesses in the U.S.

The Upstream Americas portfolio today generates significant cash flow from core producing areas. We explore for and extract crude oil and natural gas, often in joint ventures with international and national oil companies. We have a robust portfolio of deepwater and onshore acreage across the Americas to ensure sustained production.

The Gas Monetization business focuses on ways to leverage Shell’s significant natural gas position in new and existing markets. We are also developers of wind power as a means to generate electricity. Upstream Americas will invest in developing our existing resource base to sustain profitable core areas, in growing integrated gas positions and new material oil projects and in unlocking additional unconventional oil and gas resources.

Our Downstream organization is made up of a number of businesses. Collectively these turn crude oil into a range of refined products, which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use. Our manufacturing business includes Refining, Supply and Distribution. Marketing includes our Retail, Business to Business (B2B), Lubricants and Alternative Energies and CO2. Our Chemicals business has dedicated Manufacturing and Marketing units of its own.

We also trade crude oil, oil products and petrochemicals primarily to optimize feedstock for our Manufacturing business and to supply our Marketing business. The global network of Shell Trading companies encompasses Shell’s trading activities in every major energy market around the world. We also manage one of the world’s largest fleets of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and oil tankers.

In Shell, the Projects & Technology organization delivers fully integrated solutions using our proprietary technologies, technical capabilities and by leveraging third-party products. Alongside innovative research & development activities, we deploy world-class technology solutions, delivering ground-breaking projects safely & responsibly – Projects & Technology is the driver of Shell’s technically differentiated reputation.

Innovation, Research & Development

Our spending on research and development has been the largest of any international oil and gas company (some $1.1 billion in 2009). In Projects & Technology, the Innovation, Research & Development organization oversees all long-term upstream and downstream research and development activities and is responsible for creating, developing and delivering technologies that provide competitive differentiation in returns and growth for Shell.

Our technical centers–which in the Americas region includes Calgary Research Centre, and Bellaire Technology Center, Gasmer and Westhollow Technology Center in Houston – are located close to our main markets and oil and gas resources across the world. They share expertise and ideas, working together to achieve results.

Technology Solutions and Deployment

Shell Global Solutions helps customers respond to today’s demanding environment, both profitably and in a manner that is sustainable, while planning strategically for tomorrow.

Shell Global Solutions offers business solutions in the areas of Refining, Chemicals, Exploration and Production, Gas and LNG, Hydrocarbon Supply Chain, Industrial and Emissions Management. Experienced consultants work with customers to deliver technology and consultancy, provide innovative solutions, project excellence, and implement improvements to support customer business activities, from wellhead to wheel.

Shell Global Solutions (U.S.) Inc., which offers technology and consultancy services to help clients in their search for continuous improvement, employs 1,200 people in Houston at the Westhollow Technology Center.

Project Delivery

In Projects & Technology, Upstream Major Projects is responsible for the development and execution of Shell’s major upstream projects, with the aim of delivering these projects to world class standards from Concept Selection through to On-stream as measured by industry benchmarks covering safety, cost, schedule, performance and technical integrity.

In addition, Upstream Major Projects, along with the Downstream Major Projects group, provides functional guidance on project delivery worldwide to their respective business partners, thereby ensuring best practice project execution/engineering input, driving Group-wide standardization and supply chain leveraging to maximize cost savings and speed of decision making.

All of these activities are underpinned by a clear determination to achieve Goal Zero in project delivery.
