Kevin Harvick Set to Compete in Nextel Prelude to the Dream at Historic Eldora Speedway
01/06/2007
Harvick will Pilot the No. 29 Shell Late Model in Tony Stewart's Annual Charity Event; Proceeds to Benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp and Tony Stewart Foundation
HOUSTON, TEXAS – June 1, 2007 - Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series (NNCS) competition, will participate in Tony Stewart's annual “Nextel Prelude to the Dream, presented by Old Spice” (Prelude) on June 6, 2007 at Eldora Speedway, Rossburg, OH.
Harvick, the winner of the 2007 Daytona 500 and the Nextel All-Star Challenge, will pilot a dirt late model painted using the same bright yellow and red scheme used on his No. 29 Nextel Cup Series car fielded by Richard Childress Racing. The late model race car paint scheme will more prominently feature the Shell brand for this special race on Home Box Office (HBO).
The third annual Prelude is an all-star race in its own right with today's brightest racing stars participating in dirt late models to benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Tony Stewart Foundation. New this year is the live HBO Pay-Per-View aspect to enhance the fund raising capabilities of this fan-pleasing event.
"We are excited to be a part of Kevin's participation in the Prelude to the Dream," said Heidi Massey-Bong, Senior Business Advisor, NASCAR Sponsorship for Shell. "While we’ll have to wait and see if Kevin's expertise on the NASCAR tracks will transfer to a one-half mile dirt track in a late model, we are confident that it will be a great event for the fans and we are proud to have the Shell colors on Kevin's car benefiting such worthy causes."
Every entrant in the Prelude will pilot 2,300-pound dirt late model stock cars with over 800 horsepower and will run hot laps, qualifying, heat races and the 30-lap feature on the half-mile clay oval.
"To say racing on dirt isn't my strong suit would be an understatement," said Harvick. "Last year before I raced in the Prelude, I went to a dirt track school in Georgia for two days to figure out how to drive one of these things.
"I am honored that Shell has jumped on-board to support my efforts. We are helping to raise money for Kyle and Patty Petty's Victory Junction Gang Camp while having a little fun on the race track. The camp is very important to DeLana and I, as well as Tony's foundation. It will be a great time and do a lot of good as well."
Tony Stewart, two-time NNCS champion and owner of Eldora Speedway, is honored to have Harvick and other motorsports stars participate in this event.
“It’s a typical Saturday night short track format, but it’s the largest field of Cup drivers outside of an official NASCAR Nextel Cup event,” Stewart said. “You get to race against your peers and the guys you compete against every weekend, but in a lot more relaxed atmosphere.
“To have a great camp to support obviously makes that an easy choice for a benefactor. It wasn’t hard to put this event together. Every year we have more drivers signing up because they hear how much fun it is.”
