Shell Volunteers Help Clean Up Texas Beaches

22/09/2006

"Adopt a Beach" Day Part of International Effort

Nearly 450 Shell and Motiva employees and their families participated in the annual Texas "Adopt-a-Beach Day" cleanup effort on Saturday, September 23.  The Texas program, coordinated annually by the Texas General Land Office, is aligned with "International Coastal Cleanup Day," which draws tens of thousands of volunteers each September in 90 countries around the world.

Shell Oil Company, which has participated in the beach cleanup since 2000, was the largest corporate sponsor for this year's effort in Texas. Shell and its affiliate Motiva Enterprises also had the largest volunteer team in the state. Clad in bright yellow T-shirts with the Shell logo, employees and their families ranging in age from toddlers to retirees joined in the cleanup effort. The volunteers gathered at the San Luis Pass in Galveston, working from 9 am to 12 noon.

In addition to filling up their garbage bags, they recorded the types of trash they collected on data cards. This process provides more information on the sources of marine pollution – for example, how much comes from beachgoers, how much comes from industry?  At the Shell collection site, there was a competition for the "most unique item" found and a parallel search for "buried" Shell treasures planted earlier at the beach.
