Lake Pontchartrain boat launch

15/06/2004

For years, the Lake Pontchartrain boat launch that exists at the end of the Bonnet Carre Spillway has been eroding away. In a cooperative effort to save these wetlands, Motiva and Shell have formed a partnership with St. Charles Parish to create 2 ½ acres of wetlands.

The scope of reclaiming this area has now expanded to shoreline protection to prevent further coastal erosion. Motiva and Shell have donated refractory brick from the facility and concrete from houses in the community, which were demolished after they were sold to the companies as part of the Voluntary Property Purchase Program. Shell and Motiva are transporting the materials to the boat launch area. Approx 2,200 tons of materials have been sent and about 275 man-hours have supported this activity and a cost of approximately $11,000 in transportation has been resourced over the last two years.

The Parish is donating equipment and manpower to disperse the brick and concrete and cover the material with dirt that has been transported from the Bonnet Carre Spillway.
