On June 26, 2004, the Houston Area Urban League (HAUL) hosted the 36th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Gala at which Shell was presented the Gerald Hines Corporate Award for its long history of support for the Urban League at both national and local levels. Gaurdie Banister accepted the award on Shell’s behalf.

Each year, HAUL hosts a weekend of activities that include the gala to support its fundraising efforts. The gala honors those who have made significant contributions to the community in the areas of economic development, leadership, humanitarianism and community service. Each year more than 1,000 corporate, community and civic supporters attend.

In his comments, Gaurdie Banister talked about Shell’s long and productive relationship with the Urban League - approximately 40 years - and attributed its longevity to shared vision and commitment.

Both organizations support education and economic empowerment, and there are opportunities for continued, mutual support. “Shell recently launched a workforce initiative focused on engineering, geosciences and technical operational levels,” Gaurdie said. “Shell will offer help through mentoring, scholarships and internships at universities and technical/vocational schools.

“Through its supplier diversity initiative,” he continued, “Shell helps minority and women-owned businesses grow capacity. As the world becomes increasingly globalized, we need to find ways to help these small businesses take advantage of global opportunities.”
