Hundreds of Shell and Motiva volunteers remove debris from Galveston Beach

Approximately 350 Shell and Motiva Enterprise employees, retirees, family members and friends will lead an effort to clean up Galveston Beach as a part of the Texas General Land Office's (TGLO) Adopt-a-Beach program on Sat., Sept., 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.

In conjunction with The Ocean Conservancy’s global project called The International Coastal Cleanup, the TGLO’s Adopt-a-Beach program requires volunteers to remove debris from beaches while also collecting valuable information on the amount and type of debris.

While cleaning the six-mile radius of San Luis Pass in Galveston, Shell participants will be encouraged to be “data detectives” by examining unique and peculiar debris and to look for clues that indicate where the debris originated.  Clues, such as the name of a company or a city on discarded waste, are crucial when it comes to tracing pollution sources and comparing it to previous years’ data for Texas. Such information has been used to pass laws targeting offshore dumping in the Gulf.

Shell has participated in the coastal cleanup since 2000. In addition to the Texas cleanup effort, volunteers from Shell and its affiliates will spearhead similar beach revitalization efforts in California, Louisiana and Washington State.
