Fundraising Tops $51.6 Million

$2,395,000 charitable donation announced by Shell Houston Open Officials. Total of Houston Golf Association’s golf-related charity fundraising tops $51.6 million.

HOUSTON – Officials today announced the 2008 Shell Houston Open PGA TOUR tournament in conjunction with the Houston Golf Association’s other golf-related activities have generated a total of $2,395,000 for local youth-oriented charities.

The donation boosts the Houston Golf Association charitable contribution total to more than $51.6 million since 1974. Last year’s contribution total was $2,206,000.

Shell Oil Company president Marvin Odum and Houston Golf Association (HGA) president Steve Timms jointly made the announcement on the steps of City Hall. Houston Mayor Bill White also officially proclaimed Monday, October 27, 2008 as Shell Houston Open – A Chance for Children Day.

Houston Golf Association, a 501c (3) non-profit organization, has been promoting golf in the region since 1946. It has been funding local youth-development programs since 1974.

Shell Oil Company has been title sponsor of Houston’s PGA TOUR event since 1992. During that 17-year partnership with Shell, a total of 87.5% or more than $45 million of the $51.6 million total has been put to work in the community.

Shell Houston Open core charities are Acres Home Youth Association, Boys and Girls Harbor, Cenikor Foundation, Chinquapin School, Interfaith of The Woodlands, Make-a- Wish Foundation of the Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana, and the Star of Hope. Some 200 additional worthy causes and non-profit organizations also received donations or gifts-in-kind.

Whereas, the 2008 Shell Houston Open PGA Tour Event, held at the Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club, generated more than $2.3 million for local charities; and,

Whereas, proceeds from the Houston Golf Association’s golf-related activities since 1974, combined with proceeds from the Shell Houston Open event since 1992 have surpassed $51 million in charitable contributions; and,

Whereas, hundreds of thousands of youngsters have been impacted by funding from the Shell Houston Open.

The City of Houston congratulates Shell Oil, the Houston Golf Association, The Redstone Companies, Charity Partners and all the volunteers for making the Shell Houston Open a reality.

Therefore, I, Bill White, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim October 27, 2008 as Shell Houston Open – A Chance For Children Day in Houston, Texas.

Houston PGA TOUR Event Charity Milestones

  • From 2000-2008 the Shell Houston Open-Houston Golf Association charitable contribution total is $32.9 million, which is more than double the $15.1 million generated from 1990-1999.
  • The Shell Houston Open Charity Partners Program, in which companies designate a specific portion of their sponsorship fee as a direct gift to charity, began in 1994 and has generated $19,820,000 for local charity.
  • Shell Houston Open-Houston Golf Association charitable contributions have exceeded $1 million for 14 consecutive years.
  • The first Shell Houston Open-Houston Golf Association $1 million gift came in 1995 with a total of $1,196,000.
  • The very first youth development program to receive funding from Houston’s PGA TOUR event was Boys and Girls Harbor, Inc., which received $30,000 in 1974.
