Apply as a Student

Find out what we’re looking for from students and learn about the different stages in the recruitment process.

What we look for

Technical graduates are assessed across all four criteria listed below. Only capacity, achievement, and relationship competencies are assessed for commercial graduates.

Capacity: You’ll need to bring the intellectual, analytical and creative ability to learn quickly, identify issues, make judgements and propose solutions

Achievement: We’ll expect plenty of enthusiasm, resilience and confidence – you’ll be someone who can always get things done

Relationship skills: You should have the character and ability to work effectively with others in a diverse team

Technical skills (For technical students only): Understanding and approaching technical issues coupled with an enthusiasm for technical challenge.

In addition, please note that some countries/regions may have additional local requirements.

Apply

You can apply using Shell's online application system. After creating your profile, you will be required to complete three pre-registration questions to assess eligibility for Student opportunities. The next step is to select the opportunity you wish to apply for, and then complete the application form, attaching your cv/resume.

Once you have submitted the application form and cv/resume there will be a short questionnaire to complete.

When Shell has received your completed form and questionnaire, your application will then be available for consideration.

We'll confirm that we have received your details within 48 hours of submission.

Please note that Shell (nor any of the organizations that recruit on our behalf) never ask for any money or payments from applicants, at any point in the recruitment process. All individuals who are successful in gaining an offer of employment from Shell, whether directly or indirectly, are always required to go through a formal recruitment process.

Interview

We'll let you know whether you'll be invited to the interview stage approximately two weeks after receiving your completed application.

The interview will take place either face-to-face or over the telephone. We'll be assessing how you perform against the criteria listed above. At the end of the interview, you'll have the chance to ask us some questions of your own - about the role, the culture, work environment or any other area of interest to you.

This is an opportunity for you to tell us more about your achievements, the challenges you've faced and how you've demonstrated the qualities we're looking for

Offer

If we think you’re the right match for us, we’ll make you an offer for an internship/Gourami or Personal Development Award and begin to finalize the arrangements with you.

Assessed Internship/Gourami

Throughout your time on the Gourami Business Challenge or the Internship, we’ll be assessing your performance and development through a structured review process.

Q. What selection criteria do you use to assess applications for your student opportunities?
A.  While a strong academic record is important, our selection processes are designed to assess your Capacity, Achievement and Relationship.

Q. What is the Gourami Business Challenge?
A. The Gourami Business Challenge is an interactive business course and is held at a different location every year. Participants take the role of a Shell international project team tasked with developing and presenting a five-year business strategy for the fictitious company of Shell Gourami  to senior Shell leaders, gaining invaluable skills along the way.

Q. Does securing a place on the Gourami Business Challenge or an Internship mean that I will automatically receive an offer of graduate employment?
A. While by no means guaranteed, it is certainly a possibility. Your performance during the Gourami Business Challenge or your internship will be monitored and assessed by senior Shell managers. If you demonstrate the levels of performance and qualities we’re looking for, then we could well offer you a full-time position for when you graduate.

Q. What is the Shell Personal Development Award?
A. It’s a relatively new program that provides certain, eligible students with a monetary award to help them fund any activity related to their personal development.

Q. Do you sponsor the studies of individual students?
A. We only consider sponsoring students from developing countries who are interested in carrying out postgraduate studies in the UK and the Netherlands. First-degree students are not eligible. We have 90 scholarships available in total, administered by The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund.

The program is a partnership with the Universities of Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London, who also contribute to the funding. For details, please visit  www.shellscholar.org

Q. Do you take part in campus visits and recruitment fairs?
A. We use a number of different media channels to provide information on career opportunities within Shell, which means we do take part in a number of student events all over the world. Please visit your Country website for local information and events.
