Apply as a Student or Graduate

Find out what we’re looking for from students and graduates and learn about the different stages in the recruitment process.

  • Application Process

    Step 1 – Apply

    • For all applicants, we require a completed online application, an updated copy of your resume, and an unofficial copy of your transcripts or grade report prior to the interview.
    • Application Link
    • You will also need to select the opportunity you wish to apply for (Internship, Shell Recruitment Day, Gourami, etc.). Although you can only apply to one route, your application may be considered for other opportunities.
    • When Shell has received your completed application, you will then be considered for career opportunities.
    • We will personally review your application to determine if you meet the minimum job requirements.
    • After reviewing your application, we'll let you know whether you'll be invited to the interview stage, but keep in mind, the amount of time it takes to hear the outcome of your application can range depending on the time of year. For graduate applications, our most active recruiting period happens in the fall.
    • Our application requires you to first register and validate your e-mail address, so be sure to click on the link in the e-mail you receive to complete the application process.

Please note that Shell (nor any of the organizations that recruit on our behalf) never ask for any money or payments from applicants, at any point in the recruitment process. All individuals who are successful in gaining an offer of employment from Shell, whether directly or indirectly, are always required to go through a formal recruitment process.

    Step 2 – Pre-Interview

    • The initial interview will take place either face-to-face or over the telephone. We'll be assessing how you perform against established criteria. During the interview, you'll have the chance to ask us some questions of your own - about the role, the culture, work environment or any other area of interest to you. This is an opportunity for you to tell us more about your achievements, the challenges you've faced and how you've demonstrated the qualities we're looking for.
    • If we think you’re the right match for us and there is a suitable role available, we’ll invite you to a more formal assessment.

    Step 3 – Assessment

If we think you are the right match for us, you’ll be offered the opportunity to attend Shell Recruitment Day, participate in the Gourami Business Challenge or experience Shell directly through a paid internship. All three opportunities offer you the chance to gain direct experience of Shell, and during each you will have a final round interview that is part of the decision-making process to offer a full-time position.

    Step 4 – Offer

    • Once you have completed the assessment, you may be offered a full-time job opportunity. We'll notify you of the outcome within a few days after the event, although this can take longer depending on the time of year.
    • Should a suitable role not be available, we will keep your contact information within our database for future opportunities with Shell.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

If there's anything you're unsure about or you'd simply like to get a quick overview of our student opportunities, you should be able to find all the information you're looking for here.

    Q. What selection criteria do you use to assess applications?

    A.  While a strong academic record is important, our selection processes are designed to assess your Capacity, Achievement and Relationship.

    Q. What is the Gourami Business Challenge?

    A. The Gourami Business Challenge is an interactive business course and is held at a different location every year. Participants take the role of a Shell international project team tasked with developing and presenting a five-year business strategy for the fictitious company of Shell Gourami  to senior Shell leaders, gaining invaluable skills along the way.

    Q. Does securing a place on the Gourami Business Challenge or an Internship mean that I will automatically receive an offer of graduate employment?

    A. While by no means guaranteed, it is certainly a possibility. Your performance during the Gourami Business Challenge or your internship will be monitored and assessed by senior Shell managers. If you demonstrate the levels of performance and qualities we’re looking for, then we could well offer you a full-time position for when you graduate.

    Q. What is the Shell Personal Development Award?

    A. It’s a new program that provides certain, eligible students with a monetary award to help them fund any activity related to their personal development.

    Q. Do you sponsor the studies of individual students?

    A. We only consider sponsoring students from developing countries who are interested in carrying out postgraduate studies in the UK and the Netherlands. First-degree students are not eligible. We have 90 scholarships available in total, administered by The Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund. The program is a partnership with the Universities of Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Oxford, Imperial College London and University College London, who also contribute to the funding. For details, please visit  www.shellscholar.org

    Q. What sorts of jobs are available?

    A. We offer an amazing range of jobs in many different Technical and Commercial fields. Each year we examine our business requirements to find opportunities where graduates will be able to experience real responsibilities from day one. Exact jobs available, therefore, vary from year to year and depend on the operations in each country.

    Q. What minimum qualifications do I need to apply?

    A. For Technical roles, you will need an engineering or science related degree. For Commercial opportunities we welcome applications from all disciplines. While your academic results are important to us, so is your performance throughout our recruitment process.

    Q. Will I work outside my home country?

    A. In most cases, your first assignment will be in your home country. However, because we are a global company, the job you are matched with may mean relocating abroad. In Europe, for example, your application will be considered both for opportunities in the country you are studying/living in and across the region. You are welcome to note your personal preferences for location on your application. One of the clear dynamics of working for Shell is the possibility of a future posting outside your home country, and we provide full support for all staff to do so.

    Q. I need a work permit; should I arrange one before I apply?
    A. You can apply to us without having a work permit. If your application is successful and you need a work permit for the country in which you are placed, then we’ll help you apply for one. We cannot guarantee, however, that you will obtain this work permit. And please note that in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands we do prefer you to have the right to work already.

    Q. I have applied before; can I re-apply?
    A. Yes, you can re-apply if you have been unsuccessful. However, if you do wish to re-apply, we advise that you should leave:

    a) At least 12 months from the date of the final outcome of your previous application, if you were successful up to an interview.

    b) Two years from the date of the final outcome of your previous application, if you were invited to a Shell Recruitment Day.

We advise this to enable you to have a better chance of being successful the second time round. The additional time will allow you to demonstrate that you have developed yourself further and have gained additional experience and/or qualifications.

    Q. Can I defer my start date?
    A. Yes, it's possible to defer starting dates. How long your job offer will be valid with us depends on your plans and the requirements of our business.

    Q. I have already graduated and have some work experience; am I eligible to apply?
    A. Yes. You may be surprised to find that you wouldn't be the only graduate in Shell who joins us with previous work experience. In terms of process, you will still need to apply in the same way as any other graduate.

    Q. When is the application deadline?
    A. Unless you wish to work in Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands, you can apply at any time of the year. But don't delay – the sooner we receive your application, the better the chance that we can match you with the ideal job for your abilities.

    Q. How much notice will you give me if I’m invited to a Shell Recruitment Day?
    A. Generally about seven days.

    Q. How should I dress for my interview and Shell Recruitment Day?
     A. We normally recommend that you dress in business attire, although not to the point where you’re uncomfortable.

    Q. What kind of tests would I have to pass before a job offer is made final?
    A. Generally speaking, you would have to achieve the expected result in your degree qualification (if you have not already graduated) and, where required, received a valid work permit for the location you have been hired for (if you do not presently have a legal right to work there already).

    Q. English is not my first language; will this be taken into account during the Shell Recruitment Day?
    A. While fluency in English is necessary to participate in an SRD, your ability in English is not a selection criterion. If you’re not a native English speaker, you will be given additional time to prepare where appropriate, and you are welcome to bring a dictionary. In locations where the SRD is conducted in a language other than English, a level of fluency in that language is required.
