Human Resources, HR

  • Location: US
  • Joined Shell: May 2002

What is your current role at Shell?

I am an HR representative for the Chemicals Technology organization at Westhollow Technology Center. I support about 200 people in five client groups on everyday HR needs. I am also heavily involved in special projects. For instance, I managed our HR budget, which taught me a great deal about budgeting, overhead, burden – it has really raised my awareness. It’s completely different than anything I’ve ever done.

I also work as a change agent implementing a new HR IT system. I have learned a lot working with huge implementations that impact many people across many areas of the business. It has given me the opportunity to build a great network of collaborators across the region and throughout the world.

What do you like best about your role?

The new challenges that differ from what I’ve done in the past – Shell recognizes what I already know and adds additional responsibilities. I enjoy the diversity of people with all their cultures and backgrounds. It produces a variety of perspectives and solutions. There is also the promise of opportunity – you can move across businesses, throughout the nation and the world.

Tell us about your background and experience

I have worked in HR generalist roles for both Enron and Home Depot. Prior to that, I was a high school band director working with the marching band, symphonic band and orchestra as well as teaching music theory. My education is a bit unusual – B.A. in Music Education and a Masters in Education. However, it proved to be a good tie-in, a lot of the things you learn as a teacher are an easy transfer over to HR.

What makes you stay at Shell?

The flexible schedule – Shell gives me the freedom and trust to get the work done in my own way while allowing me to fulfill outside commitments. There is so much room for growth here. You can call anybody and they are happy to spend time helping or answering questions.
