What is your current role at Shell?
I work in Customer Fulfillment Finance and Business Support in Shell Chemicals where I am a Special Projects Financial Representative, which means that I have no real daily routine and am always undertaking new challenges.
Worldwide, Shell Chemicals is divided into eight (8) core businesses or PBUs (Product Business Units). A large part of my job involves data analysis for specific PBUs globally, region specific or overall enterprises.
The information is typically passed along to senior leaders who work with VPs and EVPs to present the financial analysis. At that point a decision could be made for potential improvements.
For the last six months, I have been working on the Capital Master Plan, where I am part of a team that has reviewed the proposed 2003-2004 capital project portfolio. These projects are generally growth or improvement oriented such as plant debottlenecking projects.
I deal with a lot of financial reports like income statements and balance sheets and their analysis as required. I basically live within financial data and am constantly in the system trying to find costs, revenues, and other information.
What do you like best about your role?
The best part of my job is getting involved in a variety of activities and working with several different groups within the Chemicals organization. Because of the nature of my position, I have had the opportunity to work with many people outside my immediate work group and have learned a great deal about the organization within the past year.
Tell us about your background and experience
I am originally from Brazil, where Shell has a large presence - you grow up with the Shell logo in front of you. My undergraduate degree is in Civil Engineering and I worked in a civil engineering consultant firm in Baton Rouge as a consultant for seven years prior to joining Shell. While working full time I enrolled in a finance focused MBA program and graduated in 2002.
As a civil engineer, I specialized in real estate development, planning residential subdivisions and commercial projects such as shopping malls, movie theaters and other large stand-alone stores.
