I joined Shell because of the opportunities it had to offer - it's a large global company offering diversified areas to gain work experience and great benefits. For me, stability, benefits, location and the flexible schedule were a big deal - no other companies were offering that.
I'm in the Shell Finance Services (SFS) controllers and accounting group, where we support the Shell Oil Company (SOC) corporate finance functions including closing and analysis roles, group reporting, and the legal firm's closing. With the closing processes, I have been exposed to the different modules in the SAP Stargate system.
I am currently responsible for providing the support and reporting for a variety of SOC subsidiary companies and the reporting and analysis for SFS. Basically, my life revolves around the monthly close cycle - SOC revenues associated with billings, booking expenses, and watching the close cycle.
All entries turn into the quarterly income statement and balance sheet and we can assess costs from overhead down to each employee, transmit numbers to develop into management reporting format and group reporting.
I like the daily challenges and learnings from my job, I can always count on it. I work with a great group of people and the flexible work schedule is a good benefit. The combination of a lot of responsibility and gaining more responsibility as I prove myself is a good way to grow.
Everyone was happy to have me be part of the team right way and they trusted me. I look forward to working with my team and have a direct contribution to the financial statements that are given to shareholders. I get experience understanding the different areas of the balance sheet and what goes into them. I really get to know the business from a different aspect, at a more intimate and detailed level.
