Meet Shamin - Plant Engineer

"I really liked the attitude at Shell - while there is an air of professionalism with regard to work, it's a "get to know you" atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome and part of the team."

Plant Engineer

  • Location: New Orleans, Lousiana
  • University: Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Studied: Chemical Engineering
  • Joined Shell: July 2001

Why did you join Shell?

There were a lot of outside factors that influenced my decision to join Shell. The current unstable economy made Shell very attractive - it's a stable, worldwide company that doesn't seem affected greatly by economic whims. Location was important to me as well.

I grew up and went to school in the area, and during my senior year at Tulane, I worked on my senior project with Shell - so the opportunity to work with a stable, global company in my area was perfect. And last, but not least - I really liked the attitude at Shell - while there is an air of professionalism with regard to work, it's a "get to know you" atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome and part of the team.

How would you describe your role at Shell?

I provide process support to a plant, which consists of a gas hydro-treater, butadiene extraction, and ethylene cracking unit. Our department is responsible for the day-to-day support and resolution of the more technical issues that are encountered on the job. And, of course, we provide environmental and safety hazard advice and engineering support site-wide for other high priority issues.

We are strongly encouraged to play a large role in the community - such as presenting Shell in a positive manner off-site through service at local elementary schools. Such services as working with the Partners in Education team to decide along with schools how to spend money, e.g. holiday treats, visits, volunteers for science experiments in electricity, light, magnetism, and chemistry.

What do you like most about the job?

I really enjoy the camaraderie with my co-workers - their attitude is laidback, but serious about getting the job done. The team-oriented environment results in trust. My daily work is challenging - so I'm not bored.

I would say that management is compassionate with respect for the personal work/life balance. Shell is a dynamic learning environment and encourages ongoing learning outside of the plant. There are a lot of classes and opportunities to help enhance my technical abilities. All this combined with the fact that we get to use the latest in engineering technology and software makes my job great.
